The culmination of the entire Matrix cinematic saga, The Matrix trilogy is here presented in full glory across a 10 DVD box-set. The set includes everything previously released as well as new special features dealing with the entire history of The Matrix, from conception to realisation, with extensive making-of featurettes. Also included is The Animatrix in its entirety, a fantastic companion to the original theatrical trilogy. Packaged in holographic Matrix code, this is the ultimate Matrix experience.
Included inside the box are 5 DVD cases of varying size. These cases are specially designed, being made of card smothered in code, art, and scene captures, and clear plastic to hold the DVDs so that you can still see through to the artwork behind. The 5 DVD cases are: "The Matrix", "The Matrix Reloaded", "The Matrix Revolutions", "The Animatrix" and "The Matrix Experience". There is also a further booklet with the title "The Ultimate Matrix Collection" (compensating for the lack of titling on the outside of the box), which gives details of the contents of each disc (reprinted in short inside the inner
boxes) and credits.
"The Matrix" box contains 2 DVDs, one of which is the original film 'The Matrix', digitally remastered, and the second of which is the accompanying making-of documentary 'The Matrix Revisited' (previously released). "The Matrix Reloaded" contains 2 DVDs, the first being 'The Matrix Reloaded' and the second 'The Matrix Reloaded Revisited', again the original film plus a making-of documentary. "The Matrix Revolutions" again contains 2 DVDs - concluding film plus making-of documentary. The "Revisited" documentaries provide in-depth information about how the films were made, including some truly intriguing detail regarding the most amazing of the special effects.
"The Animatrix" contains 1 DVD, 'The Animatrix'. This is a series of 9 short films made by professional Japanese manga/anime artists, some of which were directed and written by the Wachowski brothers (directors and writers of The Matrix trilogy), others of which were inspired by The Matrix and explore its surrounding issues. The Animatrix is a fantastic complement to the trilogy, providing background information through 9 stylised shorts, and exploring the philosophical ideas raised by the films. Of particular interest is the two-part film "The Second Rennaissance", which tells the story of what happened between 1999 and the setting of The Matrix - i.e. it is a prequel. "Final Flight of the Osiris", rendered in gorgeous computer graphics by Square-Enix (makers of the Final Fantasy games), tells us what happened between the end of The Matrix and the beginning of The Matrix Reloaded. "Matriculated", the last animated short, helps to further explain the themes of The Matrix Revolutions. Each of these 9 short films has an accompanying making-of featurette.
"The Matrix Experience" contains 3 documentary DVDs. 'The Roots of the Matrix' explores "the historical, philosophical and technological inspirations of the trilogy", and is very much about all the concepts behind the films. 'The Burly Man Chronicles' explore the "society of craftspeople, actors and filmmakers who devoted years to the movie trilogy" - it is an extensive behind-the-scenes look at how different people used their talents to bring together the 3 films. Lastly, 'The Zion Archive' gives us access to the "production assets for the universe of The Matrix, including concept artwork, storyboards, drawings and more." It is an archive of all the media related to The Matrix trilogy, from trailers to the soundtracks.
All of the discs play with a specialised interactive menu based upon the design of The Architect's room from The Matrix Reloaded. The special features discs further include comprehensive menus to navigate through all the possible featurettes that can be viewed. The discs themselves are printed in full-colour with striking images from the films. The one poor point about the inner DVD cases is that due to the way that the multiple discs slot into the case, you will sometimes have to take out one disc before you can take out the other (as the former disc overlaps the top of the latter).
Everything is written in The Matrix font ("OCR A Extended") and smothered artfully in Matrix-code (the vertical lines of green glyphs seen like rain in the movies). The outside box prints the code further in holographic ink so that as you observe the box from different angles the code appears to fall, as seen in the movies. The outside of the box is printed with nothing but code.
Perhaps among the most monumentous achievements in cinematic history, The Matrix trilogy is a mind-numbing attack of incredible special effects, graceful martial arts and popular philosophical ideas. Possibly one of the greatest sci-fi epics ever made, this box-set is an absolute must for fans of the genre, fans of action movies, and most of all, fans of The Matrix trilogy.
