So here it is. The uber-box set with everything Matrix-related ever made. It was inevitable(no pun intended) really wasn't it? But is it up to the standards expected of such a definitive release?
Well, in a word, yes. Firstly, the box set is well made, looks neat and sits nicely on your shelf. All the artwork and accompanying booklets are well constructed, so you feel you're getting your money's worth.
Included in this boxset is a brand new digital transfer of the first film, which does look absolutely beautiful. Not a spec or blemish in sight. My only gripe with this is that the short headbutts cut out of the previous release ARE STILL MISSING. Surely on a £50 definitive boxset of a movie you expect THE WHOLE MOVIE to be present? In addition to the movie, you also get the pre-released "Matrix Revisited". Thanks very much, but some new content would have been nice.
Reloaded is where things perk up a bit. You get the disc with the movie on (same transfer as before, which still looks perfect), but in addition you get a brand new "Reloaded Revisited" disc, with LOADS of making-ofs and documentaries. Goodbye afternoon...
Same goes for Revolutions. You get the movie once again, plus a new "Revolutions Revisited" disc, with loads more docs and features. Goodbye second afternoon...
Next you get the Animatrix. This is essentially the same disc as was released before, just with a physical makeover. A bit lazy if you ask me, but nonetheless everything you need is right here.
Now we get some more brand new stuff. We get a disc with 2 documentaries about the science and philosophical stuff related to the Matrix, which I admit are quite interesting, if not just bigging up the films for 2 hours. I've just bought the boxset, you dont need to sell the films to me anymore!
Then you get ANOTHER disc which is essentially a big making of regarding the second and third films, concentrating on the crew and filmmakers, with tributes to those cast members that dies during filming. This goes into horrendous detail, right down to the guy that makes the fake food in the restaurant in Reloaded. I mean, for God's sake...
And then finally you get a disc full of trailers and music videos. As a trailer freak I love this disc, but it's pretty compulsory for the boxset I suppose.
The only thing I really have a problem with regardong this bov set is that much of it we've all seen before. For us Matrix fans we already had the 2 disc versions of the 3 films, and the animatrix, and so you can question just how much NEW content is actually here. But if you can get over the fact that you've just bought all 3 films AGAIN to the 35 hours of bonus stuff thats here you probably wont mind that much.
All in all, if you want a definitive collection of the trilogy, this is the closest you're going to get, so its probably worth investing. It's worth mentioning though that its all available in hign definition now as well. The entire boxset has been re-released on HD-DVD! So that probably means shelling out another £50 sometime in the future. But as DVD box-sets so, this is the dog's wotsits.
