In 1999 'The Matrix' blew our screens away with a piece of science-fiction entertainment that was slick and stylish - with a definite emphasis on the style - but most importantly this was an action film that made you think. It was a film that stood out as something new and different, and in my opinion would have been much better if the Wachowski brothers had left it that way. The trick with 'The Matrix' was just that - and it's a trick that really only works once. Once you know what 'The Matrix' is, and that Neo is the one who has the capacity to destroy it, what other possible surprises are there? 'The Matrix' truly shocked with its originality, but by its position as the second film within the trilogy, 'The Matrix Reloaded' just can't deliver the same thing. Maybe the Wachowski brothers know that, and that's perhaps why they are trying to baffle us with their barely penetrable techno-speak. The only 'surprises' come from the next ambitious action sequence - in all honesty it was a slice of style that was a little too rich for me to swallow with ease...

It is now approximately six months since Neo (Keanu Reeves) discovered that he was The One and managed to cheat death within the virtual reality of 'The Matrix' by remaining alive in the real world of the future. He is now adept at adapting 'The Matrix' to perform super-human feats that astound his fellow freedom fighters and seem to confirm his status, but what do the dreams of Trinity's (Carrie-Anne Moss') death really mean - can his love for her prevent it from happening? Manipulating 'The Matrix' and destroying it seems to be a much harder proposition than might have been expected at the end of the first film. Especially when Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving) seems to have acquired additional skills since his last show down with Neo, and hundreds of sentinels are sent to destroy the last human strong-hold of Zion - a city which is split in its belief in who Neo is, and what he can achieve.

There is no doubt that Andy and Larry Wachowski have a very clear image of how their worlds look, and that they have managed to translate this to the screen effectively. Characters within the Matrix are often dressed in one of a number of colours - black, white, cream or burgundy - and in materials that appear almost tactile on screen - leather, latex, and PVC. These materials and colours give a very distinctive look which contrasts against the world that most resembles our own. However within the 'real' world these characters tend to merge much more with their surroundings as they are dressed in duller and more organic looking materials.

Their strength in knowing exactly what they want may also be a weakness. Possibly the brothers are a little too steeped in their own world, and aren't objective enough to see when scenes should be trimmed. This is most obvious in the scenes in Zion when the crew of the Morpheus' ship briefly dock and where the Council are debating what should be done over the fast approaching attack from the Sentinels. Too many of the scenes are dialogue based and involve little movement. What dialogue there is often seems inaccessible due to the level of jargon that the brothers use throughout the film. Surely at times when you are trying to make a threat seem immediate, you should be using dialogue that transmits this immediacy to the audience rather than alienating them.

Although many of the action scenes are very impressive, such as the tense chase along the Freeway which has Trinity speeding through on-coming traffic and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) fighting an Agent on top of a truck, they also occasionally seem to be too long and a little too style conscious. In the case of this particular scene the characteristic use of speeding and slowing film whilst altering the direction of the camera did not seem as seamless as in the original. When dealing with a human's actions this technique seems impressive, but when dealing with a spinning car, it feels a little too contrived.

The much-hyped fight between Neo and hundreds of Agent Smiths suffered from the former charge. Although impressive it seemed to last too long, and lack the dynamism of the original film's action sequences. In fact it confirmed to me why we will always need actors to perform roles rather than computer generated images. However impressive the images, a generated one does not contain the energy of a human being, and that is really what you engage with when becoming involved in what should be a pulse racing scene. Even the CGI in this scene was a little disappointing, with Neo's face looking a little too blank and two-dimensional.

That said, the kung-fu scenes such as the one with veteran martial arts star, Jet Li, do satisfy. Choreographer, Yuen Wo Ping, who worked on the first film and 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', has really developed the skills of the Western stars much further - and it is a credit to him and them that Keanu Reeves does look credible against Jet Li. It is just a shame that the film feels as though it lurches from action sequence to action sequence without even these scenes being consistently spot on.

'The Matrix Reloaded' also seems to be trying to cover too many commercial bases. Now that Neo and Trinity are meant to be romantically involved, we are treated to another overlong scene. This time it's the obligatory sex scene, which the brothers try and spice up by inter-cutting with the orgiastic scenes in the main hall of Zion. I get the impression that the tribal style music and vigorous dancing (which immediately make me think of the dance/music group 'Stomp') was meant to add some kind of religious experience to scenes of The One and Trinity having sex. In all honesty it just seemed like an overlong sex scene that didn't fit within the context of 'The Matrix' films. Especially when the possible justification of fleshing out characters couldn't really be an excuse, as it certainly doesn't seem to be a priority of this particular instalment of the franchise.

Although obviously a large number of characters needed to be introduced before the final film, there really were too many of them for us to become truly concerned about the fate of the last human city. Established characters also seemed underused, and I was personally disappointed that impressive personas such as Morpheus were not given more screen time. The one character that appears to have been given more of an opportunity for development is Agent Smith. The contained and self-controlled performance Hugo Weaving gives provides the film with the majority of its amusing moments, as he delivers lines that betray Smith's increasingly dry humour. It will be interesting to see whether the final film will give more opportunity for character development, and whether the potential of new additions to the cast, such as the twin albino assassins, are fully realised.

Essentially the problem with 'The Matrix Reloaded' is that it doesn't match up to 'The Matrix'. That is not to say that the film is not an entertaining one, and that it doesn't fulfil many of the requirements of a 'popcorn film'. The problem is that it is trying to be much more that that, and unfortunately it doesn't deliver. The veneer of convoluted language just can't disguise that, and you should be prepared to accept that you will be unlikely to understand exactly what is being said and what its significance is. If you just sit back and relax, you probably will absorb enough in order to enjoy the film and prepare yourself for the final instalment. But, it still seems a shame that the Wachowski brothers didn't allow the first film to speak for itself - as style over substance really wasn't a problem there.

The final in the Matrix trilogy, 'The Matrix Revolutions', is released today. Let's hope that the final film reflects the spirit of the original more than this intermediate release.

I agree with you on many levels, though I think this sequel did stand its own against the original, even if it wasn't exactly better; I wrote an op on it myself many months ago. Another winning op from you!!! Chris xxx
