Considering that after the original Matrix, Sandman sat at his computer for 19 days waiting for that liar Morpheus to free him from the Matrix before someone told the Sandman it wasn’t real, you can image Sandman’s excitement and trepidation at Reloaded.
Sandman first saw the full trailer for Reloaded while going to watch X-Men 2, and subsequently could not concentrate on the main feature. It promised more, bigger, better, faster, stronger. And Sandman believed, like any mindless cult member, Sandman followed without hesitation. This was going to be the next evolution of film. Nothing was ever going to be the same. Sandman scared many of his friends away with his obsession with all things Matrix. But it was going to be worth it…wasn’t it?
Well, having just gotten his senses back and his job (after swearing never to wear a gun harness to work again) Sandman sat back and started to analyze whether or not Matrix: Reloaded was just a case of the ‘Emperor’s new clothes’.
The story follows the crew of the Nebuchadnezzer and indeed the other ships and crews in the rebellion some 72 hours after the first
Matrix; Neo (ohhh wonderful Neo) is getting to grips with his new found powers and role in humanity’s future. Trinity (ah lovely Trinity) gets to grips with the fact that her Boyf is the Messiah, and Morpheus (Freakin' liar, I’m still waiting!) ambles around talking about the prophecy. Its hard to break Reloaded down into any discernable storyline aside from the fact that through the crew of the Osiris, the Nebuchadnezzer find out that the machines are boring their way down into Zion and the humans only have a few days left to save the last city of man. Morpheus believes only Neo can save them, and to a certain extent all of Zion are with him. They truly believe that Neo is the savior. Neo on the other hand has matters of a more personal nature running through his mind, involving his lover Trinity. Back inside the Matrix an old Nemesis is not only still active but has also managed to free himself of the Matrix and in doing so grown more powerful. Agent Smith is back and uses his newfound power on a personal vendetta against Neo. There are a few other characters thrown into the mix but they are all periphery in Sandman’s opinion, as even though they are pivotal to the story, they do not make much of an impact. Criminally underused were Niobe and Ghost, although they do get to star I their own computer game. Any who, there are revelations about the nature of man’s struggle which if you can make them out from the inane babblings that surround them, they are quite interesting twists in the storyline.
The movie is an extension of the Matrix. It gives you a little bit more insight into the world the Wachowski Bros. created and gives them a much bigger bucket with which to build their sandcastle. It’s hard to compare Reloaded to the Matrix as the original practically slid under the radar in the year the most anticipated prequel ever (SWE1: TPM) came out. And without the eyes of the world on it, it managed to wipe the floor with the opposition. This time however, it certainly had a hell of a lot more attention drawn to it. The obvious question arose of whether or not the Bros. could repeat the feat and whether or not the Matrix phenomenon was just a flash in the pan. It was no flash in the pan, of that Sandman is sure. It has already had a quantifiable effect on Hollywood and cinematography (Bob Pope is an unsung hero), but Reloaded has not added to that greatly.
It actually hurts the Sandman to say that he doesn’t think that Reloaded was anything incredibly unique (Oww). I mean don’t get me wrong, It was great to see Neo do his thing again, Trinity kicked arse and Morpheus, well, Morpheus lead and prophesized with conviction and fervor. It’s just that it was going to be a nigh on impossible task to replicate the incredible effect and influence that the original had on the industry and the audience.
Reloaded is just that, it’s the Matrix – Reloaded. Simple really, Reloaded had two or three extreme high points, the Burly Brawl (in which Neo faces 100 Agent Smiths) in particular was a favourite, exquisite choreography, classy CGI, a real joy to watch. Morpheus on the Freeway, again excellent visuals. And it also had a couple of points where Sandman eyelids were so heavy he thought he’d accidentally snorted some of his own sleep dust. The hippie rave in Zion anyone? However, the Bros. have managed to inject some much appreciated humour into the script, and the once clinical Agent Smith gets some of the best lines.
Aside from these highlights Reloaded failed to deliver the same highs that the original did, and although it's not clear whether that is a fault of the Wachowski's or the bloated anticipation of the general populace, Sandman cannot say either way. Bring on the Revolutions.

I liked the Matrix but I fear this might be too much of a good thing. Will wait for the DVD. Good op.

Cracking op! I'm not a fan of this film. The story was awful (I agree) but I found the fight scenes ridiculous. Too over the top, which means people can't identify with them (eg: copy when drunk, lol). In fact, I have a lot to say about it. I might have to write an op xxx

Advantages: Dazzling special effects, great acting, Keanu Reeves Disadvantages: Philosophy - why?, poor script, drags on for the first hour, quite a long film
Advantages: Eye-popping visuals, much more smoother plot, and one of the best car chases I've ever seen Disadvantages: Some people may think its more recycled than reloaded
