The film doesn't quite work and wasn't the hit Li needed (he would get that with "Once Upon a Time in China" a short while later) but it is interestingly ahead of its time and much better than Li's other Hollywood-produced efforts at showing him in an American setting ("Lethal Weapon 4", "Romeo ... It seems like it's high time to retire the 18th letter. On his latest album (sixth in his ... more
career, the second since coming back from a five year hiatus), Rakim feels like an MC out of time more than ever. Not only is the production on The Master uninspired to the fullest (like with Slick Rick's Art of Storytelling, Clark Kent shows that he's not capable of producing an entire album), but Rakim himself wastes his signature, slick, smooth flow on the same rhymes that every aspiring player and shot caller in the rap game is kicking. When the Master sounds like just another Follower, you know things just ain't right. This isn't a horrible album, just a mediocre one and why do we need mediocrity from someone like the R? --Oliver Wang

It is January 1895 and Henry James's play Guy Domville from which he hoped to make his ... more
fortune has failed on the London stage. Opening with this disaster The Master spans the next five years of James's life during which time he moves to Rye in Sussex having found his dream retreat. There he writes his short masterpiece The Turn Of The Screw a tale in which he incorporates many details from his own life including his experiences as a member of one of the great eccentric American families and later an exile in England. Impelled by the need to work and haunted by his past - including his failure to fight in the American Civil War and the golden summer of 1865 and the death of his sister Alice - James is watchful and witty relishing the England in which he has come to live and regretting the New England he has left.

Advantages: Jet Li in American setting better than any of his Hollywood movies Disadvantages: Typicaly for Tsui Hark it is also amateurish and clumsy in between the inspiration

>>> Summary
This is simultaneously interesting (language differences are a theme), good (martial arts action) and bad (story-telling, an ability Tsui Hark just doesn't have). Fortunately, the bad stuff is funny bad and the Eighties-ness is jaw-dropping. Jerry Trimble's mullet has got to hold some kind of record.

Martial arts master has moved to Los Angeles and opened a Chinese apothecary. One day former pupil, American martial artist Jonny, returns and beats him up on his way to claiming an undisputed title of master. Shortly, Tak's pupil Jet arrives from Hong Kong on a vacation to see whether he too would like to live and work in America but finds his master missing. As he searches he attracts the attention of all sorts of unsavoury types and reluctantly becomes master to some Mexican immigrants but a showdown with Jonny is never far away.

>>> Notes
At this point in Jet Li's career, there was no such thing. Jet Li's career was diminishing. Tsui Hark ignored this and took his "Fong Sai Yuk" star and transposed him to a contemporary American setting. The film doesn't quite work and wasn't the hit Li needed (he would get that with "Once Upon a Time in China" a short while later) but it is interestingly ahead of its time and much better than Li's other Hollywood-produced efforts at showing him in an American setting ("Lethal Weapon 4", "Romeo Must Die" and "Cradle 2 The Grave").
>>> More comment
If you are a martial arts fan, you will appreciate the meld of styles in the numerous fight sequences and the transplantation of a stereotypical kung-fu movie plot to a contemporary setting.
Fans of Jet Li are also well catered for as it is a nice reminder of just how great a martial artist and martial arts actor he is because this movie can be directly compared to his generally depressing Hollywood output.
Do not be under any misconception, though. This is typical Tsui Hark. Full of ideas, invention and amazingly amateurish and frequently laugh-out-loud rubbish for one of world cinema's most experienced directors.
>>> DVD
This is a typically excellent Hong Kong Legends presentation with good picture and sound quality and all the language and subtitles options an English audience would want. You should avoid the dubbed version at all costs as most of the non-action parts of the movie simply don't work if they are all presented in the same language.
>>> DVD Extras
The main extra is another typically busy, informative and easy-to-listen-to commentary from Bey Logan. He evens manages to point out even more rubbishness in the the story-telling that you may have missed if you were enjoying the movie (as I was). He also highlights differences between various versions and stuffs in a million other tidbits aswell (such as pointing out the filming that took place while Jet Li's arm was broken).
There are trailers for a selection of other catalogue titles which are nicely produced original trailers by the Hong Kong Legends team.
The other principal extras are three worthwhile interviews with stuntman John Kreng, Chinese leading lady Crystal Kwok and co-lead actor and former Bruce Lee stunt double Yuen Wah.
Advantages: Hilarious, good fight scenes and a romance Disadvantages: Bad acting and awful dialogue
The baddy Johnny is one of the best pantomime baddies i have seen for a long time, he had me roaring with laughter. Although the film is more about traditions and honour it makes an excellent comedy. Watching Li trying to communicate with the homeboys who rob him is a must and the budding romance between Li and May is almost painful to watch. I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone other than true Jet Li fans as the film itself is quite bad with ... ...his fighting as that is what i watch his films for and he does it with his usual flair. The Master is certainly one of the more amusing films i have seen and Jet Li is as always a joy to watch and i will certainly be watching it again ...

Advantages: Nice insight into parts of his life Disadvantages: Not really long enough to go into alot of detail
practising the art of Wing Chun which is a popular style of Kung Fu and quickly became a master at his craft. After appearing in TV Shows and several Hollywood blockbusters which were centred around his craft, he became a legend in the industry before his untimely death on the 20th July 1973 at the age of 32, there have been numerous rumours surrounding his sudden death but one that has always been very prominent is that he accidentally overdosed on painkillers, he had never taken them before so the dosage he took was too much for his body to handle.
There have been numerous videos and DVD documentaries charting the legends short life and Bruce Lee: Martial Arts Master is one I picked up a few weeks back for my Dad from play.com for Father's Day as he's a huge fan of his. The DVD only cost me £3.99 on play.com whereas on Amazon it would have ...
Advantages: Re-Mastered release. Extra footage, audio commentray, scene development, screen tests, excellent effects Disadvantages: poor acting in places, predictable.
Back) this is a non stop roller coaster ride that keeps the audience on the edge of its seat, with mind blowing special effects and ‘over the top’, ‘gung ho’ acting from its main cast. Verhoeven is no stranger to the censors and on its original release Starship Troopers was cut drastically by the BBFC, now with this new re-mastered edition of the DVD we not only get some of those deleted scenes, but also a full length feature commentary, scene by scene development, a screen test between then unknown Denise Richards (The World is Not Enough) and Casper Van Dien and even a making of featurette.
The six deleted scenes are well worth a look at but it’s perhaps the commentary by one of the best directors around at the moment that makes this reissue worth watching. On the whole the movie is not without its flaws ...
Advantages: none realy apart from wasting time Disadvantages: just about all of it
I don't think that this is even worth righting a review about but because it was so lame i thought i better to save people buying it.
Piping Live Masters is a piping dvd about piping an event in 2005 with Four master pipers recorded in competition at Glasgow's Piping Centre, during the 2005 Piping Live Festival.
This at its best it is just a very boring dvd. It is quite lame and it is an absolute waste of money the tunes that they play are very basic it is quite dull and a lot of it is out of focus and the one thing you would expect to be good on a piping dvd is the sound quality but to say the truth it is not very good at all.
There are much better piping bands out there than this one and nowadays piping is regarded as one of those things that has become out of date
I wouldn't recommend this to any one unless you where ...
