The Mask is a comedy made in 1994 and was part of the trifecta (the others being "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective" and "Dumb & Dumber") that propelled Jim Carrey from unknown to superstar. It also made a star of another unknown actor, this time being Cameron Diaz.
Jim Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss, a bank clerk and a really nice guy. But, he is a bit of a pushover and never really stand up for himself. After a particularly bad day, he stumbles upon a mask, that he finds out depicts Loki, the Norse god of mischief. When he puts on the mask, he turns into a green faced, wacky, snappy dresser! He's confident, romantic and not afraid to fight for what he believes in, so you could say he just brought out what Stanley is really like inside himself. So, together with his dog, Milo, they go out and paint Edge City red! Well, green really.
This film is a shining example of how Jim Carrey is one of the best comedy actors ever. His exaggerated facial expressions, the over the top way the mask does things, he's a cartoon character brought to life, and that description fits Jim Carrey to a tee! He is brilliant as the mask, and deserves the adulation he gets for his role in this.
I love the style of the film too, the mask seems to love retro 1940's style clothes and hats. In fact, the whole film seems to have a art deco theme running throughout it. From the bank to the club to the music, it's all very swinging and happenin'!
The script is fantastic and delivers consistent laughs. It never lets up as well, delivering high quality laugh after laugh. This is one of the very few films that actually made me laugh so much I had tears streaming down my face. The mask seemingly only does things that would make him laugh, so whether it's old movie references, music references or just plain old goofing around, he takes great pleasure in what he does.
Overall one of the best comedy films ever and a jewel in Jim Carrey's crown. Recommended for anyone who wants to laugh hard! Four stars.
