A wise author once wrote "Dark is not the opposite of light, meerly the lack of it" Therefore will somebody change the bulb in my head for I feel it it is growing a little dim.

Although the concept of a act of god null and voiding your insurance claim may seem ludicrous to many people, well apparently it can. In 2001 universal studios decided that they would produce a film to outline this strange but true fact. Although I suppose being a rather touchy subject to some they decided it would be a comedy, with a kind of serious undertone of course. I mean think about it, to counteract this claim you would have to prove that god indeed didn't exist and that it was just a figure of speech (Think about that)
Meet Steve (Billy Connolly) An average middle age bloke and former lawyer. He decided to get out of the rat race and become a fisherman, understandable of course. Well everything is as he wants it, that is until one day his boat is struck by a bolt of lightening and blown to bits. Never mind he thinks I am comprehensively insured, so contacts his insurance company for what should be a simple claim. What he didn't realise is that his loss would be classed as
an act of god and therefore they will not be paying out. So the story unfolds and after a non productive meeting with the manager of the insurance company he decides he is going to take court action against them. Although the point he makes that should he slip and his crutch by sheer chance end up becoming a permanent fixture up the insurance guys backside could be classed as a random act of god. Then after a hilarious incident in a posh restaurant where he is meeting his straight laced brother, David (Colin Friels) Who is also a lawyer. During this comical exchange he happens to meet a fiery journalist, Anna (Judy Davis) who becomes his coach and driving force for his campaign. So side by side they put together a case, which by the way is actually quite plausible thank god (pardon the pun)
The acting in this film is quite good and Billy tows the line very well, but for me he doesn't really need to try. Although the concept that in the film his character is supposed to hail from Ireland but has a Scottish accent and the film is set in Australia baffles me. Never mind these are all just minor details in the whole scheme of things, the whole concept carries it through rather well. You might think that maybe Billy would not be the best person to carry this touchy subject but you would be very wrong. To compliment this the main brunt of the characters are provided courtesy of the land of oz, and mostly unheard of. To my surprise I had never seen them off such programmes as neighbours or home and away. (shock horror) They also put on a sterling performance in conveying the point of what do you class as an act of god and who exactly decides. Although yes in typical aussie fashion it can come across as a bit made for tv at times, but believe me you can get over this fact easily.
My overall opinion of this film is damned good, it was what I would call a compelling watch. I found it had me laughing in places and scratching my head in deep conscious thought in others. There were no special effects to speak of other than the apparent hand of god takething his boat away in a bolt of light. There is no cracking soundtrack to want to go and purchase from our friends at Amazon, which I have no problem with at all I loved this film and would definitely want to watch it again soon, it just for me has every ingredient for a great film.. I would readily recommend this film to anybody, although some content would only suit the middle teen sort of age as it does carry a 15 cert. Lets face it this is Billy Connolly and he does like to get his point across with the odd swear word. Other than that there is no violence other than the odd rude gesture with a rather disgruntled crutch. As well as no nakedness, well we don't really want to see Billy in that context do we....really? You can pick this film up for around £6.00 brand new in many places, but do shop around for the best deal.
Happy Viewing people......

Nice review. Did the church win, and if so did they have to prove God is real? Wasn't this based on a true story? If it was, say so in the review.
