I have been a fan of Billy Connely since before he became universally known. He has at times caused side splitting pain and sometimes made me cringe, as he did for a period some years ago, when he slipped into a constant flow of un-necessary expletives, that really had no point or purpose other than to challenge the censors to say he could'nt do it. Billy of course did and made himself extremely sucessful into the bargain.
The DVD, "The man who sued God" is almost the perfect platform and story line, for Billy to show that he possesses acting skills well above average and suits his character, allowing him to deride authority and poke fun at institutions that need to be brought down to earth from time to time.
The film whilst comical in parts will make Billy fans smile and chuckle at times, but certainly wont have you splitting your sides with laughter, it is not the stand up Billy that most people know, whether you love or loathe him.
Billy's performance is a class above the rest of the cast and really does show that when required this stand up Bafoon can apply himself to serious work whilst remaining comic and entertaining, when called upon to do so.
I enjoyed the film, which could be rated as family entertainment, although it does contain some moderately strong language in places, which is not overdone and out of place within the context of the story, in my view. Officialy CERT 15. I would recommend the film to all, and hopefully some critics of Billy might find something to like, as he displays skills not normally associated with his imfamy.
I have deliberately not gone into length with regards the plot, as this information is readily available, but in a nutshell; Billy's character Stephen Myers is an ex, sucessful lawyer who has become completely dissolutioned with the system, marriage and people in general. He has dropped out and leads an existance on a fishing boat with his dog. All is lost to a storm and when he makes his insurance claim, they refuse to pay out, claiming his loss was an act of God. Stepen Myers is forced to return to the city to fight his claim. He has to get the courts to concede whether or not God exists and if he does, then he can sue God for his losses in court, if the court and insurance companies cannot prove the existance of God then they are liable for his losses. Some quite humourous exchanges take place and it does give some food for thought with regards insurance company get out clauses.
The DVD was first released in December 2003 and can now be readily found on various internet sites and ebay for under a Fiver.
I would recommend it for viewing to any BC fan and those who are not fans may be pleasently surprised.
