It's an interesting concept - guy loses boat, insurance company doesn't pay up, guy sues God. Not your average story by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a rather interesting take on the classic "Act of God" clause that is the curse of so many insurance policies.
The film is a low-budget Australian production, so to say I'm a little confused as to why Billy appears in it would be an understatement. Billy is Scottish. His brother, ex-wife, daughter and every other character in the film is Australian. Equally, Billy is the only really big name to appear in the film, so he does stand out rather like a camel would stand out in a flock of sheep.
This said, it is a good film. The plot is quite plausible and captures the imagination, and there are some very funny moments that combine simple slapstick and Billy's superb way with words. Including many occurances of the 'f' word. But hey, you would expect nothing less from the man. The film is deliberately thought-provoking, challenging many religious concepts, as well as challenging the 'Act of God' clause. After all, if God exists, then his actions should be accounted for and he can be sued. If God doesn't exist, then aren't insurance companies placing the blame on some fictional being? I do admire films that can provoke such deep thinking. However, in the same way that I don't like films with open, 'sequel-inducing' endings, I also don't like films that end in the predictable 'good guys win, bad guys lose, hero gets girl' format. It means that a reasonably good film is let down by an awfully weak and cheesy ending.
As for the DVD, it has precious little on it. Whether this is because I got a rental version, or simply because they couldn't be bothered to put any extras onto the DVD, I do not know. Effects were reasonable (the storm sequence at the start seemed vaguely realistic), the soundtrack worked well with the film but wasn't memorable, but nevertheless it is a good film. Worth watching but personally I wouldn't consider buying it outright.
