(+) Riveting, four main stars, the score, the direction, where shall I stop? (-) None for me, although it's long and slow, which may not be your cup of tea
Advantages: Takes me back to my youth. Disadvantages: It's over 40 years old...therefore so am I! Do I need to be reminded of such things?
/Steve Martin movie The Three Amigos, which was a spoof on the same plot. (Apologies, I can?t remember the name of the actor who played Ned Neederlander?but what do YOU care?)
ANYWAY? where was I? Well?WH Smith, Putney High Street actually. Looking for something else entirely, and what springs up before my eyes? (As well as hope, which we all know springs eternal)Why, it?s a copy of The MagnificentSeven on DVD ?pon my soul! So, staggering under the immense burden of one DVD and countless childhood memories, off I went, via the conveniently placed till, to relive my mis-spent youth.
The movie was everything I expected?all that was missing was some Butterkist and Kia-ora to take me straight back to row F, seat 25 on a Saturday afternoon.
For DVD, the film has been remastered in both the sound and the vision departments. Visually, it retains ...
Advantages: Bryson's dry, stinging wit Disadvantages: A little repetitive...I say, a little repetitive
I'm a fan of Bill Bryson. I like his dry, acerbic wit, and the way he bombards the reader with lots of dry facts yet manages to still keep it entertaining.
The latest book of his I read (although not the latest written), was Notes from a BigCountry.
As I said, delivering trivial facts and figures in an amusing fashion is Bryson's forte and when those facts are about the land of his birth (USA), and are compared then related to his once adopted homeland (UK), I can visualize him virtually drooling at the prospect.
And so, following his return to live in New England after 20-odd years domiciled in Olde England, when the editor of the British newspaper, The Mail on Sunday, asked him to write a weekly magazine column documenting his return home, you would imagine he'd leap at the chance.
Actually, he kept complaining that he didn ...
Advantages: Compelling account of Jesse James Disadvantages: misses his earlier life
The LongRiders- A Review By Addy
Introduction
The LongRiders is a film that whenever I have watched it I felt it was the sort of film that was directed by one of my favourite directors, Sam Peckinpah. Therefore it came as very little surprise to learn that Sam Peckinpah was Walter Hills mentor. So Walter Hills The LongRiders was released in 1980 and is a film based on the true story of the James/Younger gang led by the enigmatic but charismatic Jesse James.
Jesse James
During the American Civil War Jesse and Frank James rode with the Missouri Raiders under the legendary 'Bloody' Bill Anderson. This is where they harnessed the skills that would in later years see them excel as bank robbers. The Missouri Raiders used Guerilla style warfare which incorporated riding in hard and fast whilst being able to shoot ...

Features the Western classics THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE BIG COUNTRY and THE LONG RIDERS.
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN – John Sturges's remake of Akira Kurosawa's classic THE SEVEN SAMURAI has become an influential film in its own right. A small farming Mexican village that makes involuntary donations of its harvest to a gang of bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach) decides to hire a group of professional gunmen, headed by gunslinger-for-hire Chris (Yul Brynner), to protect them. Despite the meagre pay, Chris and Vin (Steve McQueen) sign on after the Mexicans see them face down some racist thugs. Chris begins to pick up other gunmen, including Bernardo (Charles Bronson), Lee (Robert Vaughan), Britt (James Coburn), Harry (Brad Dexter), and aspiring gunslinger Chico (Horst Buchholz), as they ride back to the village. The Mexicans, who are at first ambivalent about having gunmen hanging around their town, finally let down their guard and allow their visitors to teach them how to shoot and how to best reconfigure the town to defend against Calvera. When the bandits return, they find harvesting the crops a little more challenging.
THE BIG COUNTRY - Wyler's powerful Western covers a lot of territory with Gregory Peck a fish out of water as a sea captain who travels west to marry and settle, but finds himself in the middle of a bitter dispute over water rights and a jealous clash with the ranch foreman (Charlton Heston). He also discovers his fiancee isn't who he imagined and finds true romance with the local schoolmistress (Jean Simmons). Folk singer Burl Ives surprised audiences with his performance which garnered him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
THE LONG RIDERS- This violent Western follows four sets of brothers--the Youngers, the Jameses, the Millers, and the Fords--who band together for a crime spree across Missouri. Law enforcers, meanwhile, prove inept in their attempts to apprehend the renegade cowboys, who are busy arguing among themselves. Director Walter Hill's film features four groups of real-life brothers--the Keaches, the Carradines, the Quaids, and the Guests.
