Well, this was my second disappointment of the day, I'm afraid. The other day, I watched Eastern Promises, and loved it. Then came The Day The Earth Stood Still, and I thought it was pants. So, after some violent crime drama and a bit of crappy sci-fi, I thought i'd try some light-hearted comedy.
However, this is nothing more than a poor man's attempt at some of the frat pack films, such as Pineapple Express, Superbad, 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, etc. It doesn't even have the adult lewd humour that makes those films appeal to beer swilling, belching men. A Mike Myers film, The Love Guru takes the humour from Austin Powers and attempts to make a funny romcom with a bit of stupidity. It fails. It doesn't have charm and pinache of AP, nor does it have the screwy comedy that made it original.
In fact, the plot is even a bit rubbish. Ice hockey star Darren Roanoake (Romany Malco) is going through a bad spot. He has lost his woman to on ice rival Jacques 'Le Coq' Grande (Justin Timberlake), and needs her back. It's affecting his game, and his team is losing. The team's owner (Jessica Alba) seeks out the Love Guru (Mike Myers) to help Darren get his wife back.
Yep, so, the box with the silly plot line is ticked, and I have to admit, it looked quite promising on the back cover. My friend lent me the DVD, and said it was actually quite funny. Okay, there are a few moments where the humour was quite clever, but nothing made me laugh, and a lot of it bored me!
Myers plays up to the camera too much, and the random scenes with actors such as Ben Kingsley as the Guru's guru just went straight over my head. Normally, a silly film such as this would at least grab my attention and make me enjoy being a grown child (!) but it didn't even do this for me on this occasion. The acting was rubbish from Timberlake, despite a couple of funny lines, and Malco is pathetic, too. Alba does okay, but her part isn't really much more than standing there and being the pretty one with all the money and a bit of business sense. Tick!
So, not really one I can recommend to be honest. I can't even suggest watching if you just want to mong for a bit in front of a film you don't have to think about - it just plain bored me. If you want to, it's available from amazon.co.uk for £4.98, but not one I recommend.
