the blockbuster hit Austin Powers. Myers plays an American raised in India by gurus (Tugginmypudha & Satchabigknoba) and returns to the U.S. in order to break into the self-help business. His unorthodox methods are put to the test when he must settle the romantic troubles and subsequent professional skid of a star hockey player (Romany Malco), whose wife left him for a rival athlete Jacques Grande (Justin Timberlake). Mini Me is back from Austin Powers and plays the hockey coach for more classic comedic moments that will have audiences laughing from opening to closing credits.

Having been raised in India by a group of Monks, American national Maurice returned to the states as Guru Pitka (Mike Myers). Now he wants to get one up on his rival and the number 1 Guru in the States Guru Deepak Chopra. The only way to achieve his aim is to get himself onto The Oprah Winfrey show and the perfect chance has just presented itself. Pitka heads to Toronto to help their star player Darren Roanoke to rediscover his star potential and win back his wife Prudence from one of the opposing NFL teams goal tenders.
When I first saw this film advertised a few months ago I had a feeling that like a lot of comedy films I'd already seen the funniest bits. I decided however to give it a try in the hope that I'd be proved wrong and thankfully I was. The film isn't the funniest I've seen recently by a long way but it does have its incredibly funny moments and thankfully these weren't spoiled in the advert. There are some similarities with previous Myers movies like Austin Powers this isn't as good as those films, but it does stand its ground as a reasonable comedy movie.
The films direction sees Marco Schnabel take the directors seat for the first time. He does a reasonable job and it's certainly not a bad way to announce yourself as a feature film director. He doesn't try to do anything too difficult and that is certainly an advantage when it comes o this type of film. He takes the script, penned by Mike Myers and Graham Gordy and lets the script do they majority of the work. Yes there are some clever effects and some very simple yet effective ones, such as the smoke bomb disappearance but he's done them well.
He's worked particularly well with the script he was given and with Myers taking a hand in writing its fair to say he couldn't go far wrong. That's not to say that the film isn't without its faults. It does make use of some rather obvious comedy and there are short parts of the film that seem to drag a little. This isn't a particularly positive aspect as the movie only runs for 87 minutes and with certain parts seeming a little too slow it seems like it has been padded out in parts.
Perhaps the cast is the films main winner. Of course having had a hand in the writing it was fairly obvious that Myers would be taking on the lead role. There are some real parallels between his performance in this movie and past performances in the likes of Austin Powers and Wayne's World. The performance isn't anywhere near as fluent as those two roles but he does do his usual sterling job of fronting up the movie. He has tremendous chemistry with the other lead Jessica Alba who plays the Chairwoman of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
There are also decent performances from Verne Troyer who links back up with Myers following his role in the Austin Powers movies. He seems to put in a very aggressive but amusing performance as the teams manager and the scenes between him and Myers are particularly funny. The rest of the cast put in a decent performance with Romany Malco looking assured and grounded in the role of Roanoke. There is one actor though who deserves a mention for his performance in this movie and that is Justin Timberlake. He seems to be picking up more and more acting roles and his ability seems quite clear within his role as Jacques Grande, the man Roanoke's wife is now seeing.
Overall this was a much better film than I had been expecting. So often with these types of Comedy movies the best bits are given away in the adverts but thankfully, perhaps because they were so disgusting, the best parts of the film were still a surprise when it came to watching the film. It's a decent movie to watch with your significant other if you fancy a night in with an easy going comedy film. There isn't anything taxing in this movie and it's fair to say there is no real new comical moments but it does what it's meant to do and that's the main thing.
Advantages: Some funny scenes Disadvantages: Most scenes are not and too many jokes
I recently went to see the latest Mike Myers film 'The Love Guru'. I was looking forward to being able to enjoy a light hearted film that would entertain me with a few laughs but sadly I was a little disappointed.
The Love Guru was written by Mike Myers and Graham Cordy and directed by Marco Schnabel

After ... ...Grande, it is decided by the team's owner, Jane Bullard, who is played by Jessica Alba that the Love Guru Pitka must be brought in to help him. However, Guru Pitka also sees this as a brilliant opportunity to outdo his rival Guru Deepak Chopra and land himself a slot on the Oprah Winfrey show.
Will Guru Pitka be able to save Darren and get the team back on form?
Cast - Well the main character in this film is Mike Myers who plays Guru Pitka. Don't ...

...has been incredibly popular over the past five years other than voice overs Mike Myers has been away from physical acting since the Cat In The Hat. His much anticipated movie The Love Guru is just around the corner, while in the US the movie was slated quite drastically, will it fare any better when it arrives on UK shores?

...was my second disappointment of the day, I'm afraid. The other day, I watched Eastern Promises, and loved it. Then came The Day The Earth Stood Still, and I thought it was pants. So, after some violent crime drama and a bit of crappy sci-fi, I thought i'd try some light-hearted comedy.

A Mike Myers film, The Love Guru takes the humour from Austin Powers and attempts to make a funny romcom with a bit of stupidity. It fails. It doesn't have charm and pinache of AP, nor does it have the screwy comedy that made it original.
In fact, the plot is even a bit rubbish. Ice hockey star Darren Roanoake (Romany Malco) is going through a bad spot. He has lost his woman to on ice rival Jacques 'Le Coq' Grande (Justin Timberlake), and needs ...

I do know that many viewers did appreciate this film, but it was really not up to my expectations. To be sure, THE LOVE GURU is incredibly funny. Side-splitting laughter only stops when the movie does, so don't expect it to linger all the way to the parking lot (Film Threat, 18/11/2008)
THE LOVE GURU is a cheerful, silly, crass, and entertaining new comedy... It has some very groanworthy schoolboy gags - and plenty of really good ones as well. Myers' shtick isn't for everyone, but I laughed (The Guardian, 18/11/2008)
Myers' Pitka is the stealthiest of holy rollers: he makes you roar just when you think he's going to hell in a hand basket (Toronto Star, 18/11/2008)
DVD Description
Mike Myers spoofs the self-help industry with the creation of Guru Pitka, his first original character since Austin Powers. Orphaned at a young age, Maurice (Myers) studies with Guru Tugginmypuddha (Ben Kingsley) at an ashram in India where his classmate is a young Deepak Chopra. Pitka becomes a world-renowned guru in his own right, but despite his best efforts, he repeatedly comes in second to Chopra in the guru rankings. But his manager has a plan: the only difference between Pitka and Chopra is that the latter has appeared on THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW. Pitka's key to an Oprah show appearance is Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco), star player of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. Estranged from his wife, Prudence (Meagan Good), who has started dating French-Canadian Jacques 'Le Coq' Grande (Justin Timberlake), Roanoke's game has suffered terribly, putting his team's bid for the playoffs and the Stanley Cup in jeopardy. If Pitka can reunite the estranged couple in time for Roanoke to help win the Stanley Cup, he'll get more than just a big paycheque; he'll finally be on Oprah. Myers created Guru Pitka after embarking on his own spiritual search following the death of his father. He counts Chopra, who appears briefly in the film, as a personal friend. Jessica Alba stars as the owner of the Maple Leafs, and Verne Troyer is their coach. Playing sportscasters, Stephen Colbert and Jim Gaffigan share some of the film's funniest moments, while Timberlake holds his own on the comic front. Watch for brief appearances from Jessica Simpson, Val Kilmer, Mariska Hargitay (whose name Pitka assumes as his greeting), Kanye West, and even Myers himself. Parents should be forewarned: THE LOVE GURU is filled with double entendres, sexual innuendo, plenty of midget jokes, and gross-out humour.
