certain parts of the Amazon and is sponsored by a newspaper to journey to the region in order to prove his theories. His expedition includes Paula White, the daughter of a fellow explorer who was lost on the plateau on a previous trip, big game hunter Sir John Roxon, Professor Summerlee, who wants to catalogue the differing life-forms he is expecting to encounter, and Edward Malone, along for the ride in order to impress a girlfriend.Unaware that their arrival and efforts are being closely watched by an ape man, the expedition encounters terrifying creatures one after another, culminating with them being trapped on top of the plateau after being chased by hundreds of dinosaurs and a menacing ape man.Written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in 1912, the film was originally made in 1925 by First National Pictures and was a box office smash. The arrival of 'talkies' spelt the end of The Lost World and it was withdrawn from distribution in 1929, with all known prints and negatives being destroyed to pave the way for a possible sound version. In the event, none was made, although the original would prove the inspiration for such other epics as King Kong and Jurassic Park.Although better known for the creation of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's own favourite was George Challenger, who appeared in two further novels. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also proud of the film (in which he appears), taking test reels of the dinosaur footage created by Willis O'Brien to speaking engagements and passing them off as real proof of the existence of dinosaurs!

When you have a film that makes over a billion dollars in box office and merchandise then it's a dead cert that you'll get a sequel. The Lost World was released four years after Jurassic Park and once again cleaned up at the box office.
Although The Lost World is an entertainign film it doesn't really cover any new ground and by the end descends into some silly T-Rex shannaigans that don't make sense. Spielberg does a decent job with the action set peices and on seeing the first T-Rex attack scene again I can say it's a great work of suspense. But that is the problem with the film, it relies on the T-Rex far too much. The effects are much better but it overall it misses the sense of wonder that the first one had. Still hopefully the promising footage of Jurassic Park 3 will make up for some of the disappointment that people got from seeing this.
The dvd is a mildy decent effort but with this sort of film I'm sure there is the potential for a two disc set.
The film is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. The film isn't that old so the transfer is very solid with only a few slight notices of print blemish. The night scenes hold up well with some solid colour levels. There are a few soft spots though.
Of course the sound on this dvd is what makes dvd such a worthwhile. In Dolby Digital 5.1 you have the Rex's deep roar thundering through the bass channel as well as the thumping stampede of dinosaurs on the run to avoid capture. There is a R1 release that features a DTS version of the soundtrack. I haven't heard it but I'd imagine it's a lot more punchier.
The extras are headed up by a 50 minute 'making of' that goes through various stages of production. It's very similar in style to the 'making of' on the Jurassic Park dvd. You get to see plenty of footage of the animatronic dinosaurs as well as the CGI elements and how they were put together. it's interesting stuff.
Next are two deleted scenes that are are a ragged in their presentation quality. The first is an INGEN board meeting that establishes a vote of no confidence in John Hammond as the CEO. The other one is a character introduction for Roland Tembo (Pete Postlethwaite) that establishes his character as a gentleman with a hard edge. it's worth noting that the R2 version of this scene is cut to maintain a PG certificate.
Next are a few sections that are made up of stills material. You can see production photos, concept art, special effects stills and models as well as storyboards. One of the storyboards actually features a sequence with Pteranadons that wasn't shot but will be seen in some form in Jurassic Park 3.
The theatrical trailers for the forst two films are also included as well as a teaser trailer for Juraasic Park 3. This trailer is merely an announcement of the third film and features no footage of any kind from the film.
Finally there are the usual cast/crew biographies and production notes. There's also a dinosaur encyclopedia that contains a few facts and figures about the creatures.
Overall this is a decent dvd that doesn't let you down in the sound/picture stakes, the extras are solid although more video segments instead of stills would have been welcome.
Advantages: Worthy Successor to Jurassic Park Disadvantages: Not for the very young
The Lost World – is for my money as good as Jurassic Park if not better. There, I’ve said it, let the flaming begin.
I settled down last night for a relaxed night with a take away, a bottle of wine and a no-brainer dvd to watch, my girlfriend picked The Lost World, and who am I to argue – it is Spielberg after all. Down went the lights up went the surround sound and back we settled to re-watch this movie.
A quick synopsis – ... ...has had his side of the story soured by INGEN, the company which was headed by John Hammond (Richard Attenborough). ...people reading this review of the dvd the Lost World will think is about the recent one, based around Jurassic Park. I am sorry to disappoint people because the film I am writing about is the first film, which this title, which was released in 1925.
I came across this film in the bargain bucket at my local WH Smith, for the grand price of £5. As I enjoy old films, (I blame Saturday morning picture shows as a kid, which had films like Tarzan, etc) ... ...my money over and took the film home. Before I describe the film, there going to be a short history of the film just to set the picture. The picture was release in 1925, and cost 1 million dollars to produce, at the time making it one of the most expensive films to be produce. It was also the first in flight movie, being shown on an Imperial Airways flight from London to Paris in 1925. The film was withdrawn from distribution in 1929, because of ...

Advantages: Nice set pieces Disadvantages: not as good as the first
I went to see the lost world based on my admiration for it’s prequel, Jurassic Park. Just when you thought all the dinos were dead, Dicky Attenborough pipes up and says he’s got another Island full of them. What we get this time is a rather poor excuse for a film. Very dry dialogue, unlikable characters (Jeff Goldblum’s daughter) intermixed with some very nice set pieces involving dino’s going on the rampage, most impressively on the mainland USA. ...

As the sequel to the most successful dinosaur film of all time (with the possible exception of ‘Barney, but that ain’t a film), surely everybody knows what this film is about: dinosaurs chasing people. But old steveyboy and the screenwriters try to actually make a parallel storyline, as it were. Namely, a fight between Richard Attenborough and his nephew for control of the company or corporation, why Goldblums girlfriend hasn’t told him she is going ...

Advantages: Good acting, great story Disadvantages: Some violence
The other "LostWorld" category featured pics of the Bob Hoskins BBC drama but was full of Jurassic Park 2 reviews so I've added this review here.
This great BBC adaptation of Conan Doyle's famous novel was on TV over Christmas 2001 and the DVD and video were released about six months later.
The basic story is that it's the early 1900s and academic Professor George Challenger (Bob Hoskins) believes there is a "lostworld" where dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures still roam, even though they died out 65 million years ago. He leaves his museum in London and goes to the rainforests of South America in search of this mythical land. He takes sceptical rival academic Professor Leo Summerlee (James Fox) with him as well as hunter Lord Roxton who funds the trip(Tom Ward) and journalist Edward Malone (Matthew Rhys). They follow ...

Hungarian Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround
Once again, the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is every bit as spectular as the visuals - with every T-Rex footstep and roar shaking the speakers!
The extras on this DVD are also pretty good and are as follows:

Two deleted scenes.
Picture galleries including: Storyboards for 12 scenes, miniatures, models and puppets, vehicle models and concept designs.
Trailers for Jurassic Park and The LostWorld as well as a teaser trailer for Jurassic Park III.

on the mainland could have been made into a movie of its own (although far scary if it had been the smaller and more intelligent raptors). This almost afterthought made the movie seem a little rushed at the end and ruined the idea of the island and the dinosaurs being a secret.
I have read that Steven Spielberg had alot less to do with this film than Jurrassic Park and in parts this shows although there are two classic scenes he was involved in which really show the potential the film had, the first is the slowly breaking glass in the trailer when it's over the cliff and the second is the overhead shot of the raptors running through the corn field, both totally classic.
The DVD extras are not bad, the deleted scenes don't add a massive amount to the film but will be fun for any fans, the featurette is a 50 minute behind the scenes 'making of ...
