The Extended editions of the Lord of the Rings (LOTR) films are great for all who are real LOTR fans and those who really enjoyed the films at the cinema. With around two hours of extra footage not seen at the cinema, as well as hours of extra features from the history of Tolkein and his writings to the making of the film, this is a movie lovers dream come true!
The Extended versions of the LOTR films comprise of four discs in each set. The first two discs contain the film with the extra footage incorporated into the running order of the film. This footage is the actual footage that was shot and had to be cut for the cinema versions. With each of the three movies containing 30 minutes plus of extra clips, this makes the movie as a whole (all three films) have a much more understandable story line that flows at great speed, adding more twists and more of an overall image of the plot as it unravels. The extra footage also allows the characters to be developed at a greater level, as more personal stories are seen showing their real character which allows greater understanding to be had for their past and future actions as well as their own development as they travel the journey of the ring.
The third disc in each extended edition comprises of a history of Tolkein and his writings, from the moment he started to the moment he finished. This is immensely interesting information and valuable to those who really want to understand the hidden meanings of the books and also those who want to understand the reasons behind why Tolkein created certain characters and events. It is shown through this unique extra feature, that the messages Tolkein was trying to get across, through LOTR and other books, were all inspired by his life experiences from fighting in the trenches of World War I to the early war years of World War II. This Disc also contains information on the cultures and languages of Middle Earth that have yet to be matched in originality and detail in a novel or film.
The forth disc in each of the extended editions deals with how the film was made from writing the script, the art and design, how the sounds were collected, how the special effects were made, how sets were created, how the sizes of the hobbits were made so real and a lot more! This is a real insight into the huge amount of work that was put in by all departments, and gives the audience a unique glimpse of how a film of such epic scale is created. All of the special features discs run in chronological order through all three extended editions and tend to concentrate on the film which it comes with. These special features are inspiring and will offer the watcher eleven hours of enjoyment! These DVDs provide a much richer movie experience as they offer real connection with the stories and the way the movie was made.
I got each of the extended editions after seeing them at the cinema, and was thrilled at the extra footage provided, as it was really nice to see the development of the story from another angle and still have new experiences after I had seen the film. The extended editions have also helped me understand the way of Tolkein and as a result they have inspired me to read more of his works. I was not a great Tolkein fan before I saw the movies and went to see the films, purely from the point of view of someone who loves exciting films. Now I watch as both a film lover and a fan of Tolkein literature.
The extended editions are reasonably priced for what you are getting for your money! £25.00-£28.00 for each, or you could find bargains on Amazon, providing all three extended editions from £44.00.
In summary a great DVD collection that is well worth the buy! I couldn't wait to watch each of the extended movies after I had bought them, and still get huge enjoyment watching them again and again!
