I'm pretty fresh to Ciao, but I really love movies (and tv and books and video games!)... I'm not the most eloquent or insightful, but I am rather objective and I understand that you gotta look at it holistically!

There is so much that one can say about these epic masterpieces that it is hard to decide where to begin. I guess a good place is the beginning.
Unless you've lived under a rock the past 6 or 7 years (or even the past 40 years), you know the basic story of The Lord of the Rings: Frodo and his hobbit friends team up with elves, dwarfs, men, and a wizard to bring the evil One Ring to Mount Doom so it can be destroyed. Seems simple enough, right? Well, you should know better, especially considering this entire trilogy runs about 12+ hours long--there's a lot more to it than that.
Therein lies its beauty. Yes, this story is basically about a struggle between good and evil, but it is also about all of the individuals involved. They are all extremely well-developed characters with compelling stories of their own. Middle Earth seems like it is within our grasp while we watch the characters struggle through their quests. We are all right there with them, through each difficult moment. They were all such terribly good actors.
This is the kind of movie that will never leave you. When it is over and the credits begin to scroll up the screen you don't want it to be the end. You don't want to say goodbye to the characters that you have followed for so long and through so much. It's very bittersweet, and the entire trilogy has always been very moving for me. Tolkien (and Peter Jackson's massive team, of course) have created an entirely different (yet plausible) world, and once you experience it, you don't want to let go.
But that's just my opinion. I know maybe it's a little melodramatic, or maybe a little overdone and fanatical...but it's just so awesome! I can't help it!
I know that these epic fantasy movies aren't for everyone; however, if you only allow yourself to see one in your lifetime, it needs to be this one or you will be sorely missing out on the best cinematic experience of your life. It has everything that anyone could ever ask for in a movie: action, suspense, awesome special effects, magic, really bad baddies, realistic characters with flaws, love stories, etc, etc.
I'm not afraid to say that these movies are my favorite movies, hands down, of all time. I'm not a girly-girl, but I still cry every time Pippin sings that damned song.
(on another note, I would also like to say that whenever the soundtracks came out, I very much obsessively listened to them. And not to sleight any other aspect of the movie I may have missed (i.e, costumes)--take my omissions with a grain of salt and just assume that if I didn't mention it, then I most likely loved it along with everything else!)

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD features. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.

Advantages: Good filming. Good Kiwi ingenuity. Good story. Excellent adaptation. Disadvantages: Possibly a bit too long for those unaccustomed to LOTR.
Advantages: You have all three films together so you'll never have to wonder what happens next!! Disadvantages: Well if you get bored of them then you have spent quite a lot of money.
