When I saw all three films at the cinema I was blown away by the cinematography and sound. I thought it would be difficult to transfer this to the small screen. I was wrong.
Providing you have at least a 28inch TV with even the most basic surround sound system in your home you will still see, hear and feel the size of this trilogy.
The battle scenes are incredible especially in the Return of the King and the acting is amazing. The cast selection is excellant although I did have feel that Elijah Wood (who plays Frodo) was a bit 'wooden' to start with but by the 2nd part of the trilogy he settled into the role.
There are many famous faces in this series, Sean Bean, Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom amongst them.
The story is of a world now at relative peace but historically it had been a world at war and a battle between good and evil.
The evil warlord had ruled using a magic ring but was eventually slayed in a huge battle many generations before our story starts but his ring survived.
The peaceful world is inhabited by many races, hobbits, elfs, dwarfs and man amongst them. The evil warlords ring has found it's way into the possession of a hobbit called Frodo. Frodo is friends with a wise old magician, who recognises the ring. He knows it must be destroyed or the warlord may rise again and bring missery and death to the world.
The story continues with the quest to destroy the ring in the fires of volcanic mountain from which it was forged and race to succeed before the warlord and his forces are strong enoungh to destroy the peace.
Frodo and his friends are given the task of destroying the ring but they must venture deep into the warlods land and he is now reborn.
The story is a race against time with epic battles, plot twists and amazing backdrops that will make you want to visit New Zealand where much of the film was shot.
I believe that this trilogy stands next to Star Wars as the must have trilogy that can be watched over and over as the experience is amazing.

Advantages: Good filming. Good Kiwi ingenuity. Good story. Excellent adaptation. Disadvantages: Possibly a bit too long for those unaccustomed to LOTR.
