Picking up where the first film left off, Peter Jackson's THE TWO TOWERS throws the remaining members of the Fellowship into the scattered chaos of Middle-earth, now fully under...
more...siege by the forces of Sauron. While Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) journey to the dreaded Mordor, Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) are held captive by orcs, and Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) search for their abducted companions. Soon Frodo and Sam are joined by the sulking and duplicitous Gollum (portrayed by the voice and motion-captured acting of Andy Serkis), who becomes their guide through the barren lands leading to Mount Doom. Meanwhile Merry and Pippin encounter the looming Treebeard (voiced by Rhys-Davies) and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli find themselves in the land of Rohan, accompanied by an old friend. As the tale continues, each scenario becomes more perilous, and fierce battles erupt at both Isengard, home of the treacherous Saruman (Christopher Lee), and the massive Helm's Deep.
After masterfully setting up the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien in THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, Jackson continues the trilogy with the increasingly dark and battle-filled TWO TOWERS without skipping a beat. Although the director takes a few more liberties in adapting the second installment, he skillfully cuts from one scenario to the next, creating a tightly woven tapestry with the various storylines. Joining the impressive cast this time around are Miranda Otto as Eowyn; Bernard Hill as her father, King Theoden; Brad Dourif as the aptly named Grima Wormtongue; Karl Urban as Eomer; David Wenham as Faramir; and Serkis under the remarkable CGI facade of Gollum. An intense epic that features one jaw-dropping sequence after another, THE TWO TOWERS more than carries its weight as the crucial centerpiece of THE LORD OF THE RINGS.

U should watch the first episode before going to watch this one, because there is no recap, and a lot of people may forget what happened at the end of the last outing.

The story focuses on the now seperated fellowship on their quest to rid the middle-earth of the "one ring". It follows the fortunes(or mis-fortunes) of Frodo and Sam, who have seperated from the group to take the ring to Mordor. Merry and Pippin have been captured by the scary Orcs and are being taken to Sauraman. And Aragorn, Legolas and Gilili, who are on a seperate quest to save Merry and Pippin.

The effects are truly stunning and the creatures have had lots of thought as have the costumes. The locations are amazing and while sometimes it looks like it could have beet set in the North Yorkshire moors and then the next minute its the mountainous Swiss Alps! The atmosphere created by the film is one of tension and it can be changed in an instant to compasion, it is a truly emotional film.

The battle sequence is phenominal, tens of thousands of soldiers all fighting at once, so much going on in each scene, its a masterpeice and a small film in its own right.

The music in the film fits perfectly and sets the mood of each scene, without thinking it will shape your sub concious mind into the mood which the composer and director had set for that scene. This is a sign of good filmmaking, you wont want to rush out and buy the soundtrack, like some films which use big names to add popularity to it, but it does its job, to enhance the film, not to add another cash in related to the film.

Viewers who have read the J.R.R> Tolkien book will be forever finding small mistakes and things which arent done quite the same as the book, this can only be expected because it took me about a month to finish the book and the whole film in all its meticulous detail has been squeezed down to three hours. The biggest supprise is the ending to the second film, while readers will know of the slightly shocking end of the second book, this doesnt happen in the film! Leaving viewers like me wondering if they leave it for the next film, or have they left it out altogether? We'll find out next christmas!

The acting is first rate, it seems like the characters have aged since the last film none of them have had a wash and loks like they could all do with a few nights in a health spar, but this adds to the "realism" of the film. Gimili the dwarf is by far the funiest character and is responsible for more or less all the funny parts of the film.

Looking back at the film i enjoyed it a lot, I would see it again and cant wait for the whole trilogy to become available in a box set DVD, expect it in time for Xmas 2004!!

This film WILL win Oscars and it is well worth the three hours that it is on, just think of it as getting more for your money. Also a tip from experience, dont get one of those bucket sized drinks it will only make you need to go to the loo mid film!!
