character and location profiles from the film as well as a selection of paint-by-numbers style canvases and a design and printing kit for creating cards, calendars, bookmarks, posters and party invites. The interface looks good: it's stuffed with images from the film and it's very easy to use; in addition, clips from Howard Shore's evocative score play in the background. Each character profile includes a full colour photo and descriptive text, while the location profiles are purely photographic; there are more than 40 photos suitable for using as Windows wallpaper and nine screensavers (both can be installed with a single click). The print studio has basic features allowing you to type in some text to add to your card, invitation or one page flyer; the painting program allows you to print out pictures and colour them by hand, colour them first before printing or create your own pictures using a combination of freehand drawing tools and a library of pre-drawn images. Finally, there's a quiz. The Two Towers Activity Studiois a bit of a mixed bag. Not enough of the screensavers relate directly toThe Two Towersand in the main, they simply rehash the wallpaper images as slide shows. However, for younger fans and those who have to have all things Lord of the Rings, it's worth a look. --Rob Beattie

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is the second in the Middle-Earth trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. There will be a spoiler in this review for any who have not already seen the film or read the book.
The Plot
The plot of the film follows immediately on from the first film. With the Fellowship split up, the story takes on three parts. Frodo and Sam continue their quest to destroy the One Ring in the fires of Mordor, aided by the untrustworthy Gollum on who they must rely to guide them on the right path. Merry and Pippin, the other two hobbits from the Fellowship, take a different path by way of capture: as prisoners of the creatures created by the Dark Lord Sauron and his minions. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli set off to rescue the kidnapped hobbits but find themselves embroiled in a battle for mankind, joining forces with other men and creatures against Sauron's forces, marching on Isengard.
The Cast and Performances
The majority of the cast return from the first film, and are all outstanding. Elijah Wood as Frodo and Sean Astin as Sam Gamgee combine brilliantly as the two best friends relying on Andy Serkis' excellently performed Gollum. Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan are Pippin and Merry, and do very well also. Viggo Mortensen is once again Aragorn, and is joined in his chase to the hobbits and battle for Isengard by Orlando Bloom's elf Legolas and John Rhys Davies' dwarf Gimli. The interaction between these three characters is very well directed. Sir Ian McKellen again supplies a fantastic turn as Gandalf.
The supporting cast is excellent, with the two standouts being Bernard Hill as King Theoden and Christopher Lee as Saruman.
My Opinion
The Two Towers is much better than the Fellowship of the Ring in terms of pace - the film flows a lot better, as there is less of a scene to set, and less explanations needed. The splitting of the three tales is handled very well by Jackson at the helm, and we are never bored by the switch in events. The scenery is once again breathtaking, and the score monumental in epitomising the actions we see in the film. The dark mood of some of the creatures and some of the places the adventurers end up in is captured perfectly, and the film flows through excellently, and I found myself enjoying this film moreso than the first. There are many lighthearted moments in the film, particularly between Legolas and Gimli, and this helped me relax a bit more and enjoy the film as opposed to being tense all the time.
Conclusion
Marvellous film.
I rate this film at 5 stars out of 5.

The two Towers sees the first great battle of the trilogy at Helm's Deep, the fortress of Rohan. The action in these scenes is excellent and has been very well thoughtout. The Lord of the rings is an amazing one of a kind film and for that reason the huge amount of extra features is more than justified. Peter Jackson has made a great job of documenting every little thing that happened during the filming and it appears he ...

As with the Fellowship of the Ring, this Extended Edition has extended scenes and additional scenes which add depth and scope to the entire story.

...of the strangest creatures alive on Middle Earth.
(Incidentally, if you haven't seen the films or read the books and are wondering what a Hobbit actually is, think of a humanoid who is very short and stocky, and eats about twelve meals a day. Big meals, that is.)
Even though this is the second in the trilogy and thus by default leaves unanswered questions and unfulfilled plot elements, The TwoTowers is very much a complete film in itself. To my mind it's clearly the best of the three, an d in fact my favourite film to be released in 2002. The cast are superb, the story tremendous, and the special effects are fantastic. The battle scene at Helms Deep particularly combines action, drama, and a little humour superbly. Even the one or two changes to the storyline of Prof Tolkein's book (The TwoTowers is Book 2 of Lord of the Rings) are...

Advantages: Better film, lots of extras Disadvantages: None
...I have to admit that I normally consider extendedDVD versions to be a bit of a con, just to get people to pay out a bit more money, and I when I bought The Fellowship of the Ring I certainly wasn't paying out more money to get the extended version. However a friend of mine had it and exclaimed over how good it was, so I decided not to buy the normal version of the TwoTowers but to get the extended one instead, and boy am I glad I did. I actually found the cinema version of the film a little bland but this DVD version kept my interest throughout and fleshed out the movie considerably. In fact there's so much on this DVD that it's difficult to know where to start.
**** THE PRESENTATION ****
First of all I was impressed by the sheer attention to detail and care that's gone into the visual presentation of the set. If you've ever...

Advantages: still as epic in scope and visuals, great acting, final battle is atmospheric and affecting, extra footage fleshes the story out nicely Disadvantages: I still didn't find it quite as magical as the first
...Among the various interesting and amusing gifts that I received during our yuletide, er sorry Christmas season just recently, one of the more practical and, well, unexpected ones was the lovely and expensive 4-disc specialextended super duper whizbang TwoTowersDVD, which of course is released just nicely to coincide with the release of the grand finale. I did actually manage to fit in watching the first half of TwoTowers before we were unable to contain our excitement, collectively, and went and saw the Return of the King on Boxing Day.
This SpecialExtended Super Duper Whizbang Edition of the movie features, of course, about 45 minutes or suchlike of extra footage that was omitted in the cinematic version to appease the ADD-afflicted amongst us, those of us who were foolish enough to take small, fidgety children, and also in...

DVD Description
Picking up where the first film left off, Peter Jackson's THE TWO TOWERS throws the remaining members of the Fellowship into the scattered chaos of Middle-earth, now fully under siege by the forces of Sauron. While Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) journey to the dreaded Mordor, Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) are held captive by orcs, and Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) search for their abducted companions. Soon Frodo and Sam are joined by the sulking and duplicitous Gollum (portrayed by the voice and motion-captured acting of Andy Serkis), who becomes their guide through the barren lands leading to Mount Doom. Meanwhile Merry and Pippin encounter the looming Treebeard (voiced by Rhys-Davies) and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli find themselves in the land of Rohan, accompanied by an old friend. As the tale continues, each scenario becomes more perilous, and fierce battles erupt at both Isengard, home of the treacherous Saruman (Christopher Lee), and the massive Helm's Deep. After masterfully setting up the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien in THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, Jackson continues the trilogy with the increasingly dark and battle-filled TWO TOWERS without skipping a beat. Although the director takes a few more liberties in adapting the second installment, he skillfully cuts from one scenario to the next, creating a tightly woven tapestry with the various storylines. Joining the impressive cast this time around are Miranda Otto as Eowyn; Bernard Hill as her father, King Theoden; Brad Dourif as the aptly named Grima Wormtongue; Karl Urban as Eomer; David Wenham as Faramir; and Serkis under the remarkable CGI facade of Gollum. An intense epic that features one jaw-dropping sequence after another, THE TWO TOWERS more than carries its weight as the crucial centerpiece of THE LORD OF THE RINGS.
