excessive epic bombast. The composer weaves into the fabric familiar leitmotifs from the earlier two scores--such as the heroic "Fellowship" theme and the stirring "Rohan" theme--but now they are presented with a reflective sense of finality. Shore's distinctive orchestral palette for the trilogy has always featured voices--either solo or choral--as a key musical colouring, and here the professionals (including soprano Renee Fleming) are joined by Billy Boyd and Viggo Mortenson, who provide small but effective contributions. There is martial music, naturally, while the Mordor sequences--such as "Minas Morgul" and "Shelob's Lair"--elicit some terrifying orchestral drama. But the score's overall tenor is more meditative than either of its predecessors, ultimately emphasising the poignancy of farewells more than exterior spectacle as it reaches a suitably and satisfyingly Wagnerian climax in "The Grey Havens". Only the obligatory song tie-in, "Into the West" (sung by Annie Lennox), is a middle-of-the-road disappointment after all that has gone before. This single disc presents only selections from a much larger work. Hopefully, the complete scores for all three films will soon be released with the same sort of lavish attention paid to John Williams' comparable Star Wars cycle. Only then will the magnitude of Howard Shore's achievement be fully evident: at the very least, like Williams a generation earlier, Shore has given musically aware filmgoers a brief respite from wall-to-wall product-placed pop and thudding drum machines. --Mark Walker

Advantages: Great Film Disadvantages: too long
The last in the amazing trilogy The Lord Of The Rings, this is a great family film, for those fans of this film this is a great box set to get as it shows everything that you could ever want to know about the film and contains all of the extra scenes that was cut out from the original film.
this film shows the final ending to the brilliant trilogy and it couldnt be made any better, i really think that this film captures the books essence and puts ... ...however if you havent seen the first two in the trilogy then i do suggest you try to watch them before this one because this film wouldnt make much sence otherwise, this film appeals to almost everyone that i know, it has a wide range audience and its a very enjoyable film. i did however think that this film was far too long for one sitting and as a result i think ive only watched the film 3 times, so adding on all of the extra scenes will add almost ...

DVD Description
THE RETURN OF THE KING, the third and final film in Peter Jackson's THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, finds Middle-earth on the cusp of great change. Weary hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) venture further into the dark realm of Mordor, guided by the increasingly desperate Gollum (Andy Serkis), the two-faced former owner of the Ring that Frodo must destroy in the fires of Mount Doom. Meanwhile Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) contend with the deranged ruler Denethor (John Noble) at the once-mighty city of Minas Tirith, as Merry (Dominic Monaghan) joins Eowyn (Miranda Otto) and the Riders of Rohan to hold back the forces of Sauron. Amidst the chaos, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) must rise to his destiny, aided by Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) in assembling allies for a massive battle that will decide the fate of Middle-earth. With RETURN, Jackson brings J.R.R. Tolkien's world-renowned tale to a stunning conclusion. As with THE TWO TOWERS, the director deftly weaves various storylines together in one remarkable scene after another. Spectacular visuals complement Jackson's sharp focus on the characters and their emotional battles. While the special effects help to create huge battles and frightening creatures on a previously unseen scale, they never outshine the excellent ensemble of actors who bring the heart of the story home. A truly astounding work of filmmaking, THE RETURN OF THE KING skillfully concludes one of the greatest trilogies in cinema history.
