Nephew of Bilbo Sam (Sean Astin) : Hobbit Gardner for Frodo and Bilbo and also Frodos best friend who accompanies Frodo on his journey Merry (Dominic Monaghan) : Cousin of Frodo and a mischeivous character who in the beginning inadvertantly ends up joining Frodo and Sam Pippin (Billy Boyd) : Best friend of Merry and equally mischeivous who also ends up alongside the other hobbits.
Others: Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) : A wise wizard who sends Frodo on his quest, the first to identify the ring and possibly the only one fully aware of the dangers ahead. Strider/Aragorn (Viego Mortensson): A Ranger from the north wondering the plains he is a man and perhaps there is more to him than meets the eye Legolas (Orlando Bloom) : An Elven prince who is both nimble and sharp. Gimili (John Rhys-Davies) : A proud dwarf with an initial mis-trust of the elves. Boromir (Sean
Bean) : Eldest son of the steward of the strongest city of men Gondor, whose intentions may not be entirely honourable.
Plot:
In the beginning many rings were made and given to dwarves, men and elves alike. What they had not realised is the dark lord Sauron had made another ring one more powerful than all the others and more dangerously one that could rule all the others. Years ago men staged a last battle against Sauron and it would appear that he had been defeated as the ring was cut off his finger by Isildur and claimed as his own. The ring was lost when Isildur was murdered and lay undisturbed for many years when it was found by a creature very similar to a Hobbit (Smeagol/Gollum) the ring destroyed Gollum and eventually ended up in the hands of Bilbo Baggins Frodo's uncle which is where the story begins...
Bilbo decides he is to leave his home the Shire and go on one last adventure and Gandalf persuades him to leave the ring along with all his other possessions to Frodo. Gandalf soon learns that this magic ring is indeed the one ring created by Sauron and has also learned that the spirit of Sauron nows where this is. Gandalf explains that Saurons life force is bound to the ring and Sauron can never be destroyed until the ring is.
Frodo accompanied by Sam agrees to take the ring to Rivendell home of the elves in the hope it will be safe there. They are also joined by Merry and Pippin along the way. Sauron wants the ring and dispatches his nine ring wraiths to hunt down Frodo and get the ring. On their travels they meet Strider a ranger from the north who helps to protect them from these wraiths. Al appears lost when Frodo is stabbed by the wraiths but the group make their way to Rivendell and a fellowship is assembeled to take the ring to be destroyed.
The rest of the film follows their journey and the dangerous path they must take and the journey is also continued in the second and third parts of the trilogy.
Soundtrack:
The soundtrack is brilliantly crafted to compliment the film bringing tension, sadness and eeriness in just the right places. I can't say one song in particular stuck out in my head as they are mainly instrumentals or sung in elven
Special Effects, Costumes and Props:
What makes this film stand out as one of the greatest I have seen is the attention to detail that is applied throughout every aspect of the film, the weapons were all made by hand and actors had to learn another language being Elvish (not sure that is the technically correct word!) The costumes for the orcs and other various characters are very realistic and the whole set and ambiance is such that you could believe there really was a place called middle earth, in particular watch out for scenes with the Balrog (another creature created by Tolkien) towards the end of the film. The character of Gollum is very individual and uses a new technique of using a human actor connected to a series of electrodes to interact with the other actors and provide the voice yet viewers will see a computer generated character, although at times this is difficult to believe, Andy Serkis certainly deserves all the praise he has received for this
Bonus Features:
Audio Commentary By Peter Jackson And Crew And Cast Six Documentaries Covering The Adaptation Of The Book And Planning Of The Film Interactive Map Of Middle Earth Art Galleries Slide Shows Storyboards Eleven Documentaries Covering All Aspects Of The Making Of The Film Behind The Scenes
Overall Opinion:
This is truly a masterpiece and the extended edition is deinfitly worth the extra money, the film itself is longer with scenes that never made it into the theatrical version and also go a long way to explaining the story in further depth. The film combined with the seventeen documentaries can allow you to spend the entire day in middle earth and only be a third of the way through the story!
This trilogy is my all time favourites and I think it will take a long time to see something of this scale and magnitude again
