I loved the film and wanted to get it on DVD - it was my husband's idea to get the special boxed set, 4 DVD edition - I don't normally watch the extras much on DVDs. In this case however, I made an exception as I got caught up with them when hubby started to watch! Not only is the film excellent in its own right, but when you see the amount of detail that went into creating and directing it, you watch it again with new eyes.
The extras cover a whole host of things and on the whole I found them fascinating. It was great to see how the cast "became" their character, and how they formed such strong friendships with each other over the time they were shooting the movie, not to mention th accidents, dangers and lengths some of them went to in order to avoid flying (Sean Bean actually - fascinating to watch how he got up that mountain without being in a helicopter like the rest of them!). I was interested to hear the different ways the initial sequence was filmed. The other voices they tried didn't work nearly as well as that of Galadriel which was finally chosen.
The making of the special effects was equally fascinating, particularly the different ways in which they created the apparent diffence in height between the hobbits and the rest of the cast.
The making of the sets was amazing to watch - particularly the creation of Rivendell. I read another review which said that Tolkein would be proud - I think he would. I had not read the books prior to seeing the film but it inspired me to read all three which I very much enjoyed. I think this film captures the world, the languages and the spirit of the books excellently well. I've watched it several times and we are now awaiting the special collection of film 2 to add to our collection. I would highly recommend this set to anyone - I did read a comment on here that it was a rip-off but I have to respectfully disagree with that. I've had hours of entertainment out of it and considerably increased my knowledge about the putting together of such an amazing film.
