I first came across this DVD just before Christmas when buying Christmas presents for my girl friend, she wanted the Lord of the Rings DVD for Christmas and I had the agonising choice of either buying the extended version of the film for £32 or spend £10 less on the 2 DISC version, so being a little bit tight-fisted I went for the cheaper option. Which I now realise was a big mistake. The two DISC version is great and a really good buy, but since then a few people have told me that if you have not seen the extended version then you are really missing out. I thought yeah right, but last week I was in the local blockbuster and I saw the extended version and I thought for a couple of quid it would be worth a borrow.
The movie is over 4 discs and the film is about 3 hours and 30 minutes long and is spread over the first two discs. Disc 3 and 4 is made up of almost a history of the making of the film and is filmed and put together in the fashion that you were actually there during the making of the film. The box is quite thick probably as thick as two standard DVD cases and is a wonderful dark green colour. The case slips out of the cover and folds out to 5 separate panels, 4 each with a disc and the 5th has the info sheet including the scene selection listing with details of new scene’s and updated scene’s.
The DVD now has around 48 scenes with several new scenes and with most scenes being extended it is an excellent addition. The film in short is based on the first two books of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, each part of the trilogy be made up of 2 books, and it concerns a time long forgotten in the early years of man when
strange creatures roamed the earth such as Hobbits, Elves, Orcs and Trolls. The story starts with a prologue, which goes back over two thousand years to when an alliance of men and elves came together to do battle with the evil Lord Sauron, lord of Mordor, who had the ring of power forged in the fires of Mount Doom. This ring brought great power to the bearer and has the power to corrupt the wearer. The ring was cut from the hand of Sauron and passed into the hands of men who had this one chance to destroy the ring forever, this did not happen and they sort to use the ring for their own good. But they were betrayed by the ring and it was last and passed beyond all knowledge until the ring was found by the creature Gollumn. The ring consumed and corrupted Gollumn for 500 years until the ring passed to the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins. And thus the history of the one ring is brought up to date and we move to the year 3001 of the third age of the sun, 60 years later in a small town called Hobbiton in the Shire.
The story continues and tells of the epic journey of the one ring from Hobbiton across middle earth to its final destination. The first part of the journey is from Hobbiton to Bree and the Inn of the prancing pony. Thus far the ring is carried by Frodo Baggins who is accompanied by three other Hobbits. At Bree they meet with Strider a man and ranger of the wilds. Her Strider narrowly helps them avoid death at the hands of the ring wraiths, from Bree Strider escorts the Hobbits and their burden to Raintop an ancient look out post and a skirmish with 5 of the ring wraiths, again narrowly escaping death. At this point Frodo is mortally injured and is quickly escorted to Rivendell by the Elf Arwen. Here at Rivendell Frodo is healed by the Lord Elrond and Elrond calls a council of men, elves and dwarfs to decide the fate of the ring. The wizard Gandelf is also included in the council and the bearer of the ring is decided, it is to be the Hobbit Frodo. From this point a fellowship of 9 is formed consisting of men, hobbits, an elf, a dwarf and a wizard and their task is to take the ring to Mordor and cast it into the firs of Mount Doom. This brings to an end the first disc, disc two follows the journey from Rivendell to the breaking of the fellowship and the death of Boromir.
In my opinion the second disc is the best part, but I will describe that in less detail. From Rivnedell the fellowship try and go over a mountain but are thwarted by Sauroman the White, so they go through the mines of Moria where they are attached first by Orcs and then by a Balrog, a demon from ancient times. Here is where Gandelf the Grey falls in defeating the Balrog. From the mines they travel to the trees and protection of Lothlorien, a wood elf city. From there they travel down the river, which I can not remember the name of, and following a battle with Orcs, Boromir is killed, Merry and Pippin are kidnapped by the Orcs and Frodo and Sam continue on the journey to Mordor. Strider, Gimli the dwarf and Legolas the Elf are left with a tricky decision to make, do they continue to help Frodo and Sam or help Pippin and Merry. Here the story ends and continues in the second film the Two Towers.
From a story point of view it is excellent and compared to the original version, which was released in the cinema, it is a great improvement. There is a lot more character development and elaboration on the story line. The new scene after the prologue is for me the best addition to the film as it gives you some background on Hobbits and helps to develop the story. The extensions to some of the scenes are very small and slight, and show a little more into the fellowship or individual characters. They also help you understand one or two of the things that are going on and get a feel for the purpose of the fellowship.
I am glad I hired this out and guess what I will be buying in the not too distant future, I feel that whilst the original was very good this version is a cut above that version and defiantly the one to buy. Don’t be like me but the specially extended version, or even buy both versions if you can.
One thing that I forgot to mention at the top of this OP is that disc 1 and 2 contains several different sets of commentary, including cast, crew and director. These are good to listen to as they help give you a feel for what it was like filming this epic.
Disc 3 and 4 comtains several extras including a welcome to middle earth documentry, the quest for the ring documentary, passage to middle-earth: Sci-Fi channel TV Special, and also 15 internet shorts documentarys.
These arew very informative and give you a greater insite into the world of middle-earth and the making of the film. I found it espically facinating to find out how the film was made and that they started constructing the set 12 months in advance.
The music is superb and really does make the film and this will be one of my next buys.
Additional footage in this extended cut includes: Further Hobbit footage including a musical number
Frodo and Sam watching the elves going to the 'Undying Land'
While the Hobbits are sleeping, Frodo is woken by Aragorn singing an elvish tune that foreshadow's his relationship with Arwen
Additional scenes at Rivendell with Aragorn
Additional scenes on the departure of the Fellowship from Rivendell
Additional scenes in the Mines of Moria
Galadriel's imparting of several gifts to the Fellowship as they depart from Lothlorien
The film stars Elijah Wood ; Ian McKellen ; Viggo Mortensen ; Sean Astin ; Liv Tyler ; Christopher Lee ; Cate Blanchett ; John Rhys-Davies ; Billy Boyd ; Dominic Monaghan ; Orlando Bloom ; Hugo Weaving ; Sean Bean ; Ian Holm ; Andy Serkis ; Sala Baker and is directed by Peter Jackson.
The DVD is available for around about £32.99 but I will get it from www.play.com for £21.99, superb value.

This is a brilliant film, although I'm afraid I too plumped for the cheaper 2-disc option. :) Btw, I think you should include a 'spoiler' warning at the start of your review. Also, the book is *not* a trilogy - it is merely published in three volumes. (Against the wishes of the author, I believe.) x
