Lord Of The Rings has been re-edited and re-scored and made even better. LOTR runs for 200 minutes 30 minutes longer than the original release, but believe me it flies by and 200 minutes only seems like an hour and a half.
Now I may be biased on this one, but I adore Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings and Peter Jackson has made a translation of the book to film.
For those of you who don't know about "Lord Of The Rings", where have you been, then here is a short introduction to the film:
A magical ring lost for centuries is found, and by a strange twist of fate is given to Frodo Baggins, the nephew of the hobbit Bilbo, upon Gandalf the grey discovering that the ring is the One Ring of the Dark Lord Sauron, Gandalf and Frodo start of their quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it! However they are not alone and are joined by Legolas the elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Aragorn, Boromir and his three Hobbit friends Merry, Pippin and Samwise.
Their journey takes them through dark forests, dwarf mines and mountains covered with snow. Their one quest is to destroy the ring and bring peace to middle earth.
This special edition of the film contains no less than twenty extended scenes and six brand new scenes never seen before.
So does this improve the film in anyway? ---------------------------------------- Well yes and no, if you haven't seen the original cut then you won't know the difference, but if you've seen the orginal cut several times, as I have, then you'll notice the extra footage straight away.
The extra footage does make a difference to the film giving you a better insight into the journey that the fellowship are making.
The picture quality is superb the colours are vibrant and the sound is superb, this version of the film also hosts a DTS-ES soundtrack which the other version didn't.
What are the special features? ------------------------------ The first two discs come with four feature-length commenteries by Peter Jackson and the writers, also 30 members of the film.
Discs three and four contain six hours of bonus features and nearly 2,000 images.
Disc three takes you on a journey from the book to the vision of the film, looking at costume design, weapon design, a documentary about JRR Tolkien and loads more.
Disc four takes you from the vision to the reality of the finished product with documentaries covering the cast, photography, a day in the life of a hobbit, visual effect and lots lots more.
The only things which are a bit dissapointing are the 12 page booklet does have a tendency to come apart after several reading and the fact that the film is split over two discs which is a real shame.
If films like "The Abyss" and "Independence Day" can have two version of the film on one disc then why is LOTR split over two?
Besides that little quarm LOTR is a superb film with fatastic cinematography, with superb scenery, acting and special FX.
If you are a fan of LOTR then you should really take a look at this film as it's the closet that you'll ever get to Tolkien's vision of Middle Earth on the screen and if you've never read the books and have no idea what to expect then expect a wonderful world of hobbits, dwarves, ogre, wizard's and elves.
