The film is about the true life events surrounding Ray Fernandez and Martha Beck. The unlikely couple go around on a killing spree, targeting young single lonely and often rich women. Fernandez and Beck travel together under the guise of being brother and sister to execute their plans. They do this by responding to lonely hearts columns in the newspaper and after the money is signed over to Fernandez, they kill the women and bury the bodies in various parts of the country (in trunks, under floorboards, coal sheds etc). John Travolta stars as the lead detective who follows his instinct and it doesn?t let him down as they eventually capture the two cold blooded killers.
I was really excited when I heard that they were going to make this story into a film, as I had read a book about the events (incidentally) a couple of months back ...
Advantages: Superb acting, especially by Whoopi Goldberg Disadvantages: None
of the film, Shug notes that if you can walk through a field of purple and not notice the colour, then there is something wrong in your life.
I've seen this film two or three times now and each time it just seems to get better. There is nothing I can find to criticise in it, except that perhaps the story of Celie's pain and suffering during her rapes and beatings is not really dwelled on as much as it should have been - purely to make the film more commercial.
I highly recommend this film. It is not easy to successfully portray the story of someone's life over a period of time, but all due praise to the actors and their make-up artists - they did a fabulous job.
I watched the film only version, but the DVD is available from play.com for just £5.99. ...
