The Cast and Performances
Timothy Dalton does not really cement his first film as Bond, and although he certainly looks the part, there is something of the charm or suave exterior we have been used to from Connery and Moore, and even Lazenby. Dalton's Bond is much more hard-hitting, run of the mill agent than the smooth talking ladies man with a mean streak.

The Plot
Bond is sent to ensure the safe passage of Koskov, a KGB defector from Austria to England, where he realises that Russian KGB General Pushkin has reinstated the Russian policy of 'smert' spionam', meaning 'death to all spies'. He is forced to team up with Russian agent Kara Milovy to combat Pushkin, but all is not as it seems with Koskov's defection, and his business dealings with arms dealer General Whitaker are suspect enough to make Bond think something deeper, is going on.

Maryam d'Abo is very sexy as Russian agent Kara, but her acting leaves a little to be desired. Jeroen Krabbe gives a good performance as Koskov, as does John Rhys-Davies as Pushkin. Robert Brown, Desmond Llewelyn and Lois Maxwell return as M, Q and Miss Moneypenny. The remainder of the cast support very well.
My Opinion
First up, I am not really a fan of Dalton as Bond. He pales into insignificance in comparison to Moore and Connery, and perhaps this is an unfair judgment from me as I have been used to the other actors as Bond for so long. However, there are elements about Dalton that I liked. He looks the part, definitely, but I was not convinced of the acting and the lack of Bond's humour in this film from him, and he was not well supported by a rather pretty but bland performance from Maryam d'Abo.
Director John Glen took the hot seat again for this film, and has actually engineered an okay film, but this, too, is not up to the standard of other Bond films. The story does come from the pen of Ian Fleming, but it is not one of the better ones.
There was much controversy over Dalton playing Bond, and he was actually not the first choice for the role. It was originally offered to Pierce Brosnan, but he could not accept due to a clause in his contract with the producers of the show Remington Steele.
The scenery of the film is once again beautiful, as are all the Bond films, and I did still enjoy the film, although I will say it is probably one of my least favourite Bond films. Another good soundtrack, with the title track this time being performed by A-Ha.
Advantages: Great action film with a serious edge to it, disc is superb quality and packed full of high quality extras Disadvantages: A perfect Bond disc, no faults!
'We have an old saying too - and you're full of it.'
Oooh, here we have a new Bond to replace Moore's departure after 'A View With A Kill', and a bloody tough, mean son of a gun he is too. 'The LivingDaylights' marked a new Bond, and a new style of Bond films, returning to the old Connery rugged machismo style, and Timothy Dalton is like a breath of fresh air after Moore's geriatric last performance, relying on jokes because he was too old to do any stunts.
'The LivingDaylights' is the 16th remastered Bond DVD to be released (though it is the 15th Bond film to be made, as TWINE was released first with Doctor No), and a personal favourite of mine. Not least because Dalton is an excellent serious Bond who made one good film, was forced to make the appalling totally-un-Bondmanlike 'Licence to Kill' and then left the series.

Advantages: Belter of an action movie Disadvantages: Disadvantages? In a Bond movie. Never!
's for only ?19.99 (BOGOF offer!) during the run-up to Christmas. I purchased four DVD's on this offer. Two of the recent releases starring Irish actor Pierce Brosnan, (the current Bond) and the two Bond adventures starring his immediate predecessor in the role, Welsh actor Timothy Dalton; "The LivingDaylights" (1987) and "Licence To Kill" (1989).
~ ~ It's very hard to believe that Dalton only ever made two Bond movies. In fact, I was convinced he had actually made more until I checked it out on the Web. He had been mooted as a successor to the most successful (and still the best!) Bond actor to date, Sean Connery, but ongoing commitments at the time meant the role went instead to Roger Moore. (In my opinion, the worst actor ever to play Bond)

Advantages: Fresh and original. Disadvantages: Far too many characters in the film.
With Roger Moore resigning the part and not returning as 007, the producers had to find their leading man and find him very quickly indeed. The scripts had been written and the locations had been secured to start filming. Step in Shakespearian actor Timothy Dalton. Dalton was a man who had been approached by the producers a number of years earlier as a replacement for Sean Connery; however it was now his time to take the Tuxedo and become Bond Mark IV for the 1987 release of The LivingDaylights.
As soon as the gun barrel sequence begins, you realise that this is going to be different straight away; the plot revolves around an assassination attempt in Gibraltar of two Double 0- agents whilst on a training exercise, something that Bond has to deal with in his own unique manner to pursue the assassin. A sequence in which you see Dalton ...

DVD Description
In this installment of the James Bond series, Agent 007 (Timothy Dalton) is assigned to protect a Russian defector (Maryam d'Abo) from the KGB. When the defection proves to be an elaborate ploy, Bond woos her anyway, and together they follow a trail to a crooked American arms dealer supplying weapons to Afghanistan. Dalton finally assumes the role of Bond after refusing it 16 years earlier with DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. The film is loosely based on Ian Fleming's short story.
