Hans Christian Andersen's heartbreaking tale of doomed love is transformed into a feel-good story in this Disney animated feature.
In this version, Ariel (voiced by Jodi Benson) is a 16 year old mermaid who is King Triton's (Kenneth Mars) favourite daughter.
Despite her father's prohibition of contact between merpeople and humans, she is fascinated by the world of the human beings who live above water, and explores the sea looking for the remains of shipwrecks, and any human objects that she may find, which she collects and keeps in a secret grotto.
She likes to swim to the surface of the ocean with her best friend, the fish Flounder (Jason Marin), to meet Scuttle (Buddy Hackett), a seagull who shares his (wildly inaccurate) knowledge of human life with her.
One night, in one of her trips to the surface, she approaches a ship where people are celebrating and sees Prince Eric (Christopher Daniel Barnes).
She falls in love with him, and when he almost drowns during a storm, she saves him.
Ignoring the frantic efforts of exasperated little sea crab Sebastian (Samuel E. Wright) - a court musician whom King Triton has ordered to chaperone Ariel and keep her out of trouble - she is determined to enter the human world.
Meanwhile, Ursula, the evil Sea Witch (Pat Carroll), has been observing her, and on discovering that she is in love with a man she cannot be with, she convinces a desperate Ariel that she can make her dream of becoming human come true: in exchange for her voice, she will transform her in to a human for 3 days. If the Prince loves her back and gives her the "kiss of true love" before the sun sets on the 3rd day, she will become human forever; if not, she will return to being a mermaid and will forever belong to the Witch.
Ariel makes the deal. When she is found by the prince on the beach, the mute, human Ariel is taken to the palace, and has to race against time and Prince Eric's impending wedding to someone else to win her freedom and the man she loves.
First released in 1989, the film was a worldwide hit - and marked the beginning of a new era of critically and commercially successful fairytale-based animated films for Disney (which included Aladdin and Beauty And The Beast).
The film was developed to resemble a Broadway musical, and it shows. The score - music by Alan Mencken and lyrics by Howard Ashman - includes some of best-known songs of the whole Disney canon of animated films, like Ariel's "Part Of Your World".
But much more importantly, in my view, it features 2 of the best original songs ever written for a film, of any genre, in the history of cinema. Both are lyrical and musical masterpieces:
- "Under The Sea", Sebastian's glorious anthem extolling the virtues of life underwater:
"Under the sea, under the sea Darling it's better down where it's wetter Take it from me Up on the shore they work all day Out in the sun they slave away While we're devoting full time to floating Under the sea..."
-"Poor, Unfortunate Souls", Ursula's self-justifying, self-promotional number, combines great humour with unsettling perversity.
"I admit that in the past I've been a nasty They weren't kidding when they called me, well, a witch But you'll find that nowadays I've mended all my ways Repented, seen the light, and made a switch To this And I fortunately know a little magic It's a talent that I always have possessed And dear lady, please don't laugh I use it on behalf Of the miserable, the lonely, and depressed (pathetic)
Poor unfortunate souls In pain, in need This one longing to be thinner That one wants to get the girl And do I help them? Yes, indeed Those poor unfortunate souls So sad, so true They come flocking to my cauldron Crying, "Spells, Ursula, please!" And I help them! Yes I do"
This is my favourite Disney film of all. Apart from the great songs, it is full of strong, interesting characters.
In Ariel, Disney has created one its best female protagonists, an intelligent, strong-willed young woman who knows what she wants.
Sebastian the crab is a joyous triumph, and Ursula the Sea Witch is both hilarious and seriously scary.
This is an extremely entertaining film that any one of any age can enjoy.
...all time favorite Disney Princess. The reason why I love the Little Mermaid so much is that, in comparison to other Disney movies, there are some extremely strong thematic features and moral messages included in the film. These are of course presented in a more subtle manner in order to please the younger audience. This was most certainly a movie that exceeded my expectations, in terms of Disney characteristics. I loved the endearing characters, ... ...I believe that this was the last “handmade” Disney movie, meaning that over a million drawings were created to depict the various scenes in the movie, and if you ask me, this only adds to the endearing charm of the movie as a whole. The Little Mermaid (1989)
Ariel is the youngest daughter of the king of the seas, King Triton, but she's not happy with the life she has. Ariel would much rather be up on the land with the humans she finds so enthralling. ...that has pretty much shaped the rest of my life, it was this The Little Mermaid, it was one of the first films I remember and as my Mum reminds me even now I declared at the end of it that I wanted to be a mermaid, a declaration I am still making even now 18 years later (although I am as close as I'm going to get I suspect).

The wonderful thing about Disney is that I grew up watching it, listening to the soundtracks and pretending to be the character.
For me, Disney sparked my imagination more than any other type of film.
The Little Mermaid is a wonderful Disney adoption of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale from many years before.

I love my Disney films and The LittleMermaid was my other main favourite one of the classics from when I was younger. I think this is such a fun film and appeals to everyone. This is the 28th Disney animated film.
The story:
Ariel is a young, beautiful mermaid who wants to explore land and wishes she could have feet instead of fins. Much to the annoyance of her father King Triton, she is forever going off exploring with her friend Flounder to find human treasure and has a cave that she keeps it all hidden in. One day when a passing ship gets into trouble she rescues the handsome Prince Eric and takes him to the shore. Before he fully wakes she goes back into the ocean but he can remember hearing this voice singing to him.
Desperate to have legs she makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula who tells her she can have legs ...
Advantages: Classic, Ariel, Mermaids!!!! Disadvantages: Some extras a let down
If you know me then you would know that my favourite movie of all time was?and still is *giggle* The LittleMermaid (1989). Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to be Ariel and now at twenty you would think I would have grown out of it?but as you're reading this you soooo know better :). I have, not that I should admit it, all of the Disney movies on VHS (Yes. Every. Single.One.) and was extremely upset when I realised I would be forced to buy them all again due to the DVD. So when it was released?with not only all the extras but also a SECOND movie titled (originally?) The LittleMermaid 2 - Return to the sea, I was extremely excited?

Advantages: Classic family favourite film. Disadvantages: NONE!
Ok, feel free to call me sad, immature, whatever you like, but I just have to say, The LittleMermaid has got to be my all time, ultimate favourite since being tiny, best Disney film. Over Christmas, I watched this for the first time in a very long time, and I was just turned back into a child again when I sat down to watch this, I was over the moon!
Originally brought out in 1989, it?s a re-make of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale. It has been re-released on DVD, and there unfortunately aren?t any amazing extras on the disk, but there is a sing along opportunity, woo hoo!
The beauty of the film is that it embeds itself in your head, because of the magic and charm that seeps out of every song, every funny line, and every character. Ariel, the littlemermaid is beautiful and innocent, with a gorgeous singing voice, Eric is ...
