The plot.

The story revolves around the adventure of an astoundingly beautiful red-headed mermaid named Ariel. Thanks to her inquisitive nature finds the human world a fascinating thing. Her love for the human world is only furthered by the fact that her exploration into the world is discouraged by her father, King Triton. Ariel secretly keeps a hidden store which is full to the brink of random objects that have come from the human world, she guards this little secret well and dreams of one day being a human herself.

As a sea storm rages, a ship sinks into the murky darkness. The crew are fine and manage to get away safely but the handsome Prince Eric is drowning, with curiosity driving her, Ariel swims to him and finds him floating in the sea, she takes him to a beach and as Ariel gazes into Eric’s face she realizes that he is her true love. Eric wakes up and startles her, she dives into the water and all Eric can remember is the glimpse he aught of Ariel’s beautiful face.

Eric is enraptured by Ariel and starts a kingdom wide search for her but cannot find her anywhere. Meanwhile Ariel is just as infatuated with Eric, she decides to go see the old sea witch Ursula in order to gain wisdom to be able to see Eric again. Ursula tells her that Ariel will belong to the humans for one price and that price is her voice. Ariel also has 3 days as a human to get prince Eric to fall in love with her, if he kisses her before the sun sets on the third day then she will remain a human forever but if not then Ariel belongs to Ursula. Ariel plunges head forward into this being oblivious to the dangers of what may happen.

I wont reveal too much about what happens after this as there’s already been rather a large spoiler.

The movie itself.

A classic Disney film, released in the cinema in 1990 and then on video the following year it has been a favourite film of mine since I was a very small child. The movie is brought alive by the animators in the Disney workshops with lush oceanic scenes, royal regal palaces and a general feel of discontent in Ursula’s lair.

The music on the little mermaid is astounding and I dare anyone with any joy in their soul not to sing along and embrace the glorious music which is both fun to listen to and to sing. Many of the songs on the movie won Oscars and its not hard to see why.

The film is action packed, tense, has lighter moments that everyone can enjoy, has funny dialogue and is one that will definitely please the kids.
