Interestingly enough I have a plentiful supply of both filmed and cartoon films which relate to the sea, this is the one I intend to bored you with today!
We all know the story of the Little Mermaid, Ariel who fell in love with Prince Eric and disobeying her father sought to live on the Land with him. This is true Disney tradition is the story of what happens next - around a year or so later Ariel and Eric have a daughter Melody. In keeping with their odd family history they take young Melody out to sea to be introduced to her Grandfather, who gives her a shell shaped locket. But this time the sister of original baddy Ursula, Morgana come to the surface and kidnaps the young Princess in order to get hold of the trident - and by association all the powers of the ocean. After this ploy fails Morgana vows to continue her quest to gain control of the oceans and King Triton vows to find and vanquish her. But the locket is dropped.
This leaves Ariel
with the terrible knowledge that she has to stop her daughter knowing of her mothers heritage, to achieve this she and Prince Eric build great walls enclosing the shore to separate the two kingdoms and protect Melody. But with her mothers mischievious nature and a great love for the sea the walls can only hold our young Princess for so long, Sebastian returns again as the poor soul attempting to care for the young girl. On one of her banned excursions out to the ocean she discovers a shiney looking shell, yet more proof that this Princess is just like her mother - it is the locket lost years ago.
But when Melody finds the locket it is seen by Morgana who hatches a new plot to take the trident from the King. And it helps that the young Melody is unhappy she feels different from her peers and at a Ball being held for her an incident between Sebastian and the palace Chef provides the laughs.
After cleaning the locket she sees it has on it her name and when opened plays the song she recognises from her Christening cruise along with the projected images of Atlantica from her dreams. Ariel knows she has to tell Melody the truth, but is scared and unsure, while she makes up her mind about the best course Melody runs away and heads out to sea where she is directed to Morgana for advice. Where Morgana tells her that she can become a mermaid.
After turning in to a mermaid she begins an exploration of what the world under the sea is like, the song as she does is more of a duet with her singing about how great it is and Ariel singing her regrets that she hadnt told Melody.
Melody in her zeal to thank Morgana for giving her the chance to be a mermaid agrees to go and retrieve Morgana's 'stolen' trident from Atlantica. Along the way she meets two new chracters Dash the Walrus and Tip the Penguin who help her on her journey.
Unlike many Disney films this also shows how some of the orginal characters have moved on, Flounder is now a father for example.
As Ariel searches Atlantica for her daughter Melody is removing the trident from its stand, leaving her locket behind, proving it was her as noone other than a descendant of Triton can remove it. At the critical moment as could have been predicted Ariel finds Melody and Morgana. The rest of the film you will need to watch for yourself.
Like most of the Disney sequels it is a poor film by comparison to the ever popular original, the songs are less memorable (who cant sing Under the Sea from the Little Mermaid?), the characters less endearing. But it does benefit from greater animation expertise and the use of many of the original voices. And if nothing else serves as a very good warning of the dangers of falling in love with a land-dweller if you are a mermaid or vice versa.
The special features on my version of the disc are limited to some bonus footage, a read a-long, trivia game which kept me entertained for almost 20 minutes (so will probably keep younger children than myself entertained for much longer), and a What am I? Game which for some reason wont play on my DVD player but from memory was quite good fun when I played it on my laptop.
The film is 72 minutes long and rated U but as the case tells us has some mild peril in it. All in all this is a brightly coloured fishy tale that kids and even bigger kids will enjoy but you are unlikely to love this as you did the original but it is worth a watch.
