inThe Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, the sequel to Disney's landmarkThe Little Mermaid. Melody is threatened by Morgana, the evil sister of the sea witch Ursula (both voiced by Pat Carroll). Before you can say "Briar Rose", Melody's parents decide to keep their daughter's roots a secret, forbidding her to learn about the ocean while Morgana is around. Now the budding teenager secretly frolics in the sea with Ariel's old friends, Sebastian and Scuttle. When she learns the truth from Morgana, Melody becomes an unknowing pawn in her scheme--and Mum has to take to the sea again to help.As with Disney's other made-for-video sequels,The Little Mermaid 2looks and sounds wonderful (and reunites much of the same vocal talent). Four to nine-year-olds who grew up with the original will certainly enjoy seeing the friends again. A new set of artists has come up with four catchy tunes and some fun new characters, including Tip and Dash, a pensive penguin and his blubbery walrus friend. Yet whereBeauty and the Beasthad a deliberate Christmas-themed sequel andPocahontastold the tale of her historical trip to England, the plot here is somewhat forced. It is pretty much a rehash of the first film with different characters. Tip and Dash are a reincarnation of Timon and Pumbaa and Morgana is exactly like her sister, except thinner. Besides the stellar music, this unneeded sequel also misses another important aspect of the original--heart. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

Interestingly enough I have a plentiful supply of both filmed and cartoon films which relate to the sea, this is the one I intend to bored you with today!
We all know the story of the Little Mermaid, Ariel who fell in love with Prince Eric and disobeying her father sought to live on the Land with him. This is true Disney tradition is the story of what happens next - around a year or so later Ariel and Eric have a daughter Melody. In keeping with their odd family history they take young Melody out to sea to be introduced to her Grandfather, who gives her a shell shaped locket. But this time the sister of original baddy Ursula, Morgana come to the surface and kidnaps the young Princess in order to get hold of the trident - and by association all the powers of the ocean. After this ploy fails Morgana vows to continue her quest to gain control of the oceans and King Triton vows to find and vanquish her. But the locket is dropped.
This leaves Ariel with the terrible knowledge that she has to stop her daughter knowing of her mothers heritage, to achieve this she and Prince Eric build great walls enclosing the shore to separate the two kingdoms and protect Melody. But with her mothers mischievious nature and a great love for the sea the walls can only hold our young Princess for so long, Sebastian returns again as the poor soul attempting to care for the young girl. On one of her banned excursions out to the ocean she discovers a shiney looking shell, yet more proof that this Princess is just like her mother - it is the locket lost years ago.
But when Melody finds the locket it is seen by Morgana who hatches a new plot to take the trident from the King. And it helps that the young Melody is unhappy she feels different from her peers and at a Ball being held for her an incident between Sebastian and the palace Chef provides the laughs.
After cleaning the locket she sees it has on it her name and when opened plays the song she recognises from her Christening cruise along with the projected images of Atlantica from her dreams. Ariel knows she has to tell Melody the truth, but is scared and unsure, while she makes up her mind about the best course Melody runs away and heads out to sea where she is directed to Morgana for advice. Where Morgana tells her that she can become a mermaid.
After turning in to a mermaid she begins an exploration of what the world under the sea is like, the song as she does is more of a duet with her singing about how great it is and Ariel singing her regrets that she hadnt told Melody.
Melody in her zeal to thank Morgana for giving her the chance to be a mermaid agrees to go and retrieve Morgana's 'stolen' trident from Atlantica. Along the way she meets two new chracters Dash the Walrus and Tip the Penguin who help her on her journey.
Unlike many Disney films this also shows how some of the orginal characters have moved on, Flounder is now a father for example.
As Ariel searches Atlantica for her daughter Melody is removing the trident from its stand, leaving her locket behind, proving it was her as noone other than a descendant of Triton can remove it. At the critical moment as could have been predicted Ariel finds Melody and Morgana. The rest of the film you will need to watch for yourself.
Like most of the Disney sequels it is a poor film by comparison to the ever popular original, the songs are less memorable (who cant sing Under the Sea from the Little Mermaid?), the characters less endearing. But it does benefit from greater animation expertise and the use of many of the original voices. And if nothing else serves as a very good warning of the dangers of falling in love with a land-dweller if you are a mermaid or vice versa.
The special features on my version of the disc are limited to some bonus footage, a read a-long, trivia game which kept me entertained for almost 20 minutes (so will probably keep younger children than myself entertained for much longer), and a What am I? Game which for some reason wont play on my DVD player but from memory was quite good fun when I played it on my laptop.
The film is 72 minutes long and rated U but as the case tells us has some mild peril in it.
All in all this is a brightly coloured fishy tale that kids and even bigger kids will enjoy but you are unlikely to love this as you did the original but it is worth a watch.

Review of The Little Mermaid 2 Return To The Sea (Animated) (Wide Screen) (DVD)
Advantages: If you liked Little Mermaid One, it follow on nicely. Disadvantages: Disney blandness, very much a kids flick
My children loved the first Little Mermaid cartoon, so I bought this on the assumption it would be as good as the first, and if you are unde ten, then it is. Most of the original cast reprise their voiceover roles, even Rene Auberjoinois (Odo in Deep Space Nine) returns as the french chef.
This time around, Ariel is married and older and has a little girl called Melody. To stop Ursula's (the Sea-Witch form the first film) evil sister Morgana from ... ...is forbidden from swimming in the sea and is not told of her Mermaid heretige. Needless to say, she disobeys and ends up getting in all sorts of musical, fishy , brightly coloured trouble.
The songs are good, high polish Disney quality, the animation is better than the (now quite old) original, and the new characters (a penquin and a walrus, Morgana and a shrunken shark called Undertow?) are all passablebly entertaining, but this is all from my ...

Advantages: Same lovable characters from the first, similar storyline Disadvantages: Disappointing sequel, bad soundtrack
I enjoyed the first Little Mermaid greatly as a child, and decided to purchase this to see if the legend lives on.
It doesnt.
With the same characters I thought this would be an acceptable sequel, however I was greatly disappointed. The storyline is basically the reverse of the original, and anyone, even children, can guess this 5 minutes into the film. Extremely predictable with weak songs which make you cringe. Ariel's daughter is not a particularly ... ...they did with Ariel in the original. Sebastien is the film's saving grace, but such a tiny little lobster can do little to save this fishy flop!
Disney has attempted to keep this story fresh by introducing new characters who are frankly rubbish. Flander has grown into a fat, ugly fish with a very strange voice that scared my niece, and Ariel looks not a day older than she did in the original.
Disney's soundtracks are always something promising, ...

Advantages: Nice story and songs, little Melody looks like a perfect mix of her parents! Disadvantages: A bit simplistic and not very powerful
The original Little Mermaid was needless to say a Disney classic with beautiful songs and a touching story. Therefore I was certainly apprehensive when purchasing this second installment as a present. I decided to watch it as well just to see what it was like, and though I wasn't blown away, I was pleasantly surprised. Though nothing can come close to the original, in this film the story shifts to Ariel's little daughter Melody, who though is human ... ...a very different side to the story where the main song is actually about the wonders of being a mermaid, unlike the original which was about the wonders of being human! All in all, nothing too memorable but a worthy attempt at rekindling the magic of the original, and even better for kids who love mermaids as my little niece does! ...
