Last night I was lying in bed and I had the sudden urge to watch the Lion King on DVD. As it was 1am, I deceided to skip it. But, when I woke up I still wanted to watch it, and no matter how hard I tried to resist, I couldn't.
Persuading my 4 year old to join me was more than I could manage, so I settled on the sofa mid-afternoon and switched on the DVD player.
I am sure you all know the story of the Lion King, but I will refresh your memory.
Simba is the lion cub. He lives happily in the jungle with his parents. His father, Mufasa, is King of the Jungle and is very proud of his son. One day, while father and son are out exploring, Evil Uncle Scar plays his evil hand, and with the help of the hyena's, Mufasa is killed.
Scar-evil, horrid and despisable-then blames Simba for the King's death and persuades him to flee the Kingdom, thus making Scar King.
We then follow Simba in his adventures without family or friends. He stumbles on Pumbaa and Timon, a comedy duo who will definately warm your heart and make you laugh. The quickly three become friends.
Simba is soon reunited with his childhood friend, Nala, who persuades the young prince that he must return to the Kingdom to save it from the Evil Scar. Simba's return leads to a confrontation, the classic good against evil. Who will win, who will be King, how will the story end?
This animation is like a musical. Songs accompany most scenes, and I guarantee that you will be singing along with most of them. Or at least tapping your feet. The songs are strong and totally relate to the action on screen. On the other hand, the music does not take anything away from the action, you may be singing along but you won't be distracted.
Walt Disney has many family orientated films. Favourite animation titles include 'The Jungle Book', 'Aladdin', 'Cinderella', 'Beauty and the Beast', 'Bambi' and '101 Dalmations'. These movies are all fun, heart warming and beautifully made. Children and adults will enjoy them in equal measures.
The 'Lion King', for me, slots in easily above all these movies. It is a beautiful story, the animation is incredible and the sound track is amazing. 'Hakuna Matata' is catchy, great fun and will stick in your head for days to come.
In conclusion, no matter how old (or young) you are, you have got to own 'The Lion King'. I class it as a Classic, its definately one of the best films I've ever seen.
I paid £24.99 for my 2 Disc Special Edition DVD. I have seen the single DVD for as little as £9.99 (retailers such as Tesco and Asda). Its best to look out for special offers, such as the Woolworths offer where you save £10 when you buy 2 Disney Dvd's at the same time.

I love this film. I may have to dig our video out and watch it later. My boyfriend has never seen it so I might make him watch it with me. He'll thank me for it!

This was the first film I took my eldest daughter to see at the cinema, when she was 5.
Advantages: The story is good, the animation is phenomonial, the computer effects are exelent, it never gets boring Disadvantages: The characters maintain the same Disney "cuteness"
