Thank you very much for all the reads and rates and comments and things! :) Also started to write on Dooyoo under the name of 'Beanie85'. Trying to write different reviews for each site, though I might have a couple on both sites!

Me and my boyfriend went through a bit of an 'animal planet' phase and saw a lot of David Attenborough documentary style programs (well.. maybe it was more me who liked it so much!) but one of our favourite documentaries came from the life of mammals series, so I decided to buy my boyfriend the complete 'The Life of Mammals' box set for his birthday.
The box set itself comes in a cardboard sleeve, and the inside of the box set containing the dvds unfolds so that you can see all of the dvds at the same time. The front cover of the box set has a picture of a tiger on the front of it surrounded by some water and in big letters at the top it says 'The Life of Mammals' and then at the bottom 'David Attenborough'
The dvd box set contains 4 dvds with a total of 10 episodes on them.
The episodes are:
Episode 1: A Winning Design - Tells us about mammals in general and what makes them different from other
species and how they survived. Episode 2: Insect Hunters - All about mammals who eat insects! Episode 3: Plant Predators - This episode tells us about herbivore mammals. Episode 4: Chisellers - About mammals who make use of wood by gnawing on it etc Episode 5: Meat Eaters - The carnivores of the animal world and how they survive. Episode 6: Opportunists - About the versatile omnivore mammals Episode 7: Return to Water - The mammals who lived on land but then retreated back to the water. Episode 8: Life in the Trees - All about tree dwelling mammals Episode 9: Social Climbers - The hierarchy of the monkey world and their social skills Episode 10: Food for Thought - The differences between human and mammals
Disc one contains episodes 1 - 3, disc two has episodes 4 - 6, disc three has episodes 7 - 8 along with the special features 'Video to Music', 'Fact Files', and 'Behind the Scenes' and then disc four has episodes 9 - 10 with the special features 'Photo Gallery', Original Score' and 'Behind the Scenes'.
Each of the discs has a different picture of a mammal on the front of it which makes them really attractive and different.
This series is so interesting. We were so hooked on it we were even watching a couple of episodes a day, and we watched the complete series in no time at all! Having said that though, we have re-watched episodes on this box set so its not the kind of dvd you buy to only watch once.
The special features on the dvd are also wonderful. Sometimes I don't tend to bother with the special features on dvds but I found these ones really interesting. I really liked the photo gallery. Some of the pictures are really amazing. I find the nature really beautiful and these pictures are out of this world . I especially liked the ones of armadillos and porcupines! There are also a lot of pictures of David Attenborough taken from when he was filming.
The total running time of the box set is a staggering 498 minutes! Each episode is around 40 mins long.
David Attenborough not only presents these programs but he also wrote them. I think he is an absolutely brilliant presenter and I really find that he makes what he is talking about seem interesting, and it is obvious he is fascinated by nature and this passion really shows.
The filming in this is amazing. Attenborough travels from Antarctica to Africa to bring us wonderful and unimaginable footage. Not only is this really great to watch but it is really educational and you will learn things that you probably never knew before. It really gives an insight in to the animal world of the mammals.
The title music to the dvd is very powerful and moving orchestral music that fits really well with the episodes. The music is by Dan Jones and Ben Salisbury.
I got my dvd from Amazon.co.uk for £39.99 (but its on there right now at the reduced price of £22.48) I have also seen this box set in HMV, so it is not very hard to get a hold of if you wish to buy it.
The rating of the dvd is an 'E' which means that it is exempt from the BBFC classification and it is a BBC dvd.
The Life of Mammals is part of a bigger collection of David Attenborough work 'The Life Collection' which consists of 'The Life Of Birds', 'Trials Of Life', 'Life In The Freezer', 'The Life Of Mammals', 'The Private Life Of Plants', 'The Living Planet, 'Life On Earth' and 'Life In The Undergrowth'.
I would highly recommend this dvd box set. Not only is it entertaining and hard to stop watching but it is really educational and quite an eye opener! It's the kind of dvd you will want to watch again. Not just one to gather dust on the shelf. Five stars!
