Set in the Victorian times (1899) in a different world dimension, Allan Quatermain a famous adventurer and crack shot marksman is tracked down by a consort for the queen in a retreat in Africa. He is persuaded to come back and join a team of the dark and mysterious to join forces to combat the evil presently terrorising England.
This evil figure is known only as 'The Fantom' and his true identity is shielded by an iron mask. With his armies of assassins and weapons superior to any known to man he schemes and plots to take over the world. He causes conflict between the countries of the world making them believe that war mongering is taking place and making them turn on eachother.
Enter Quaterman who has arrived back in England. He is taken to a meeting at a house where he is to meet his new team and take on the responsibility of finding a few more strange and outrageous members to join them.
When finally bought together 'The League' consists of Captain Nemo (Shah), Vampiress Mina Harker (Wilson), the Invisible Man known as Skinner (Curran), the eternal Dorian Gray (Townsend), Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde (Fleming) and an ordinary everyday American Secret Service Agent Tom Sawyer (West).
Once the League is signed up, it is their mission to uncover and bring down the evil force terrorising the countries using their skills and supernatural forces. But they find that there is a great deal more to this war than just a battle!!!
This film brings supernatural/fantasy/romance and friendship all together into a greatly entertaining film with a brilliant storyline and great special effects.
The special effects are at times breathtaking, just the effects on Captain Nemo's Submarine is spectacular. With everything going on in the film that you could possibly ask for it brings all round family entertainment and very enjoyable viewing.
Although this film is classed as a (12) I think it can be enjoyed by those younger, with only one slight swear word in the film (which is easily missed) and slight fantasy violence , in my opinion this could be watched from around age 7 and up.
When I purchased this film it cost me £4.99 on DVD which I find excellent value, and this was from a Chain Supermarket so easily found for this price, I have seen it in certain Petrol Stations for this price too. My advice get out there and buy it and sit back and enjoy the ride.
