DVD Description
The seedy underbelly of the Hollywood film industry is brought to light in Elia Kazan's powerful adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's last, unfinished novel. Robert DeNiro anchors the film with his commanding portrayal of 1930s movie mogul Monroe Stahr (modelled after MGM's studio head Irving Thalberg), a ruthless businessman who dominates studio politics but remains haunted by a lost love from his past. Scripted by playwright Harold Pinter, this rich evocation of 1930s Hollywood features strong supporting performances by Tony Curtis, Robert Mitchum, Jeanne Moreau, and Jack Nicholson.
Advantages: A great night out. Loads off good laughs with exceptional performances Disadvantages: Not many. Ending slightly abrupt and could have benifitted from beter soundtrack
...Heartbreakers, the recently released Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Love Hewitt film is one of the funniest and utterly enjoyable comedies I have seen over the last few years. It’s relative box office failure in the UK astounds me, as it was hugely successful, and well received in the USA. This might be due to the fact that Miss Hewitt is still relatively unknown in the UK. The story needs to be seen to be appreciated, but centres round a mother and daughter con-team financially exploiting the male, sex-driven population of Los Angeles. The movie warrants viewing alone for Gene Hackman’s tobacco tycoon (he proves himself to be even more adapt at this genre than his usual thriller roles!) and the amazing physical beauty of Miss Hewitt. A good night out, whether you...

Advantages: Good acting Disadvantages: May be too long for some people
...Directed by:
Martin Brest
Starring:
Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins & Claire Forlani
Here is a story in the old tradition. I watched this film on video and at the end, tucked away, after the credits, are three interviews with the stars listed above. Anthony Hopkins says during his interview that this film was in the tradition of films like "It's a Wonderful Life" and I have to agree with his observation.
The basic idea behind Meet Joe Black is that Death decides to take a holiday and become mortal for a short while to experience life. It, takes a body (Brad Pitt) and makes a deal with a successful business tycoon (Anthony Hopkins) to "put off" the tycoon's death for as long as Death feels it can take for a vacation.
The strength of the film is the acting of the three central characters, Death, the tycoon and his younger daughter...

Advantages: Good storyline Disadvantages: Too long
...On the eve of his 65th birthdaya media tycoon,Bill(Hopkins),is visited by the Grim Reaper(Pitt) who promises to delay his death if Bill shows him around the Earth. Death is on some kind of busmans holiday, eager to experience the ways of mankind. He discovers the delights of peanut butter, gets to talk Jamaican, has sex and falls in love with Bill's daughter. At nearly three hours long this supernatural soap is too long and nowhere near as profound nor touching as it thinks it is. Its as gooey and slow moving as molasses....
