picketed so vociferously on its release in the US--this Jesus bears little resemblance to the classical Christ, who was not, upon careful review of the Gospels, ever reported to have had sex with Barbara Hershey. Heavily informed by Gnostic reinterpretations of the Passion,The Last Temptation of Christ(based rather strictly on Nikos Kazantzakis's novel of the same name) is surely worth seeing for the controversy and blasphemous content alone. But the "last temptation" of the title is nothing overtly naughty--rather, it's the seduction of the commonplace; the desire to forgo following a "calling" in exchange for domestic security. Willem Dafoe interprets Jesus as spacey, indecisive and none too charismatic (though maybe that's just Dafoe himself), but his Sermon on the Mount is radiant with visionary fire; a bit less successful is method actor Harvey Keitel, who gives the internally conflicted Judas a noticeable Brooklyn accent, and doesn't bring much imagination to a role that demands a revisionist's approach. Despite director Martin Scorsese's penchant for stupid camera tricks, much of the desert footage is simply breathtaking, even on small screen. Ultimately,Last Temptationis not much more historically illuminating thanMonty Python's Life of Brian, but hey, if it's authenticity you're after, try Gibbon's. --Miles Bethany

It has been a fair while since I watched this film but since no one has yet written an opinion on it, here I am!
When the original book came out, there was a lot of fuss about the content of the book and the author, Salman Rushdie had to go into hiding for fear of his life. The main cause of the upset was that the book was blasphemous and that it was insulting to christians and other religions who see Christ as one of their prophets. I am sure most people can remember the press coverage at the time.
Eventually, the film version of the book came out and it was more out of curiosity that I watched it more han anything. I mean, what could be so bad about it? I was brought up as a catholic and went to catholic schools so I thought I'd watch it to see what all the fuss had been about. I'll have to apologise for not knowing who made the film, who the main actors are etc but I tend to have a not so good memory for these type of things.
We are all aware that towards the end of his life, Christ was tempted by the devil in various ways to give himself a better life and avoid the suffering that he knew was on its way. On each occasion he resisted. The basis of the film is that as he is dying on the cross, the devil comes to him again and offers him one last chance - die on the cross or live the life of a normal everyday man. The film then goes on the premise that instead of taking his fate, Christ accepts the devils offer of a normal life. During the film you see what sort of life he may have lead had he not died i.e having a wife (maybe more than one!) and numerous children and having normal relationships with those around him, and holding down a job to make a living. Having sat through the film, I can understand why people opposed the book and the film - at several points, Christ is portrayed as a bit of a womaniser who used to visit the local prostitutes - what would be called today as a bit of a 'jack the lad'. He was also portrayed as having children by various women, none of whom he was married to - something which even today is not taken very lightly by most people. At the end of the day, it shows Christ being a 'normal' every day red blooded male. At the end, it does show you that what goes on in the film is only what is going through his mind when he contemplates the devils latest offer.
I am glad that I decided to watch the film - having being taught at school what went on during Christ's life and more or less being told what to believe, it was nice to watch something that gave a different view as to what may have happened. If you are fairly open minded as ar as religion is concerned, I would recommend watching the last temptation of Christ. However, if you hold deep and strict religious beliefs, I wouldn't recommended it as it could be taken as being offensive - hence all the original furore.
I have to say that on the whole, it is more of a 'thinking' film instead of being full of action but is still worth watching. You may have to search through the archives of your local video shop to find it though!
# please note nothngon thisop has actually changed - I have just added the bits about storyline etc #
Advantages: Poses very interesting questions Disadvantages: Harry Dean Stanton is underused as Saul
Watching The Last Temptation of Christ again after about ten years it is easy to see why it got the puritans pants in a twist. It also asks questions that no one has asked (specifically not on-screen) before. It poses ideas and gives a new slant on the New Testament – who was the man Jesus and was he just a man like you and I?
Best to go into the film with an open mind rather than lambasting it straight away.
Director Scorsese has chosen a great ... ...able to emote the feelings of great responsibility and desperation. Standout performances by Harry Dean Stanton as Saul give great lasting roles.
This film is a long way from the Cecille B DeMille films of the 40s and 50s which offer a sanitised view of Christs life, nor is it like Zeffereli's Jesus Of Nazereth. It is a faithful recreation of the times even Peter Gabriels soundtrack uses authentic musical instruments (apart from one sequence where ...
