matters, that every ephemeral peak, deepening drop, every drive, every breakfast, every touch, sound and word slowly forming, extends to the heart of some fundamental genetic momentum. Paresh is the glue of the story, son of two former non-violent revolutionaries who met on a demonstration in Ahmedabad. Detached from the urgency that fuelled his parents' convictions, he adopts a passive stance toward the events of his life, becomes an observer. His daughter, Para, in turn exposed to Paresh's haphazard experience, his lack of urgency, takes firm root in combat flying. Reaction and adaptation, circumstance and principle: through the characters' instalment in the present--1970-2000-2030--and through the evolution of one family, the future of India and Indians is skilfully conjured. In a matter of decades, India has become a militaristic power from its ascetic, caste-structured past and Para, only one generation removed from Thoreauvian pacifists, has become a war hero. The wonder of Joshi's narrative is not the fantastic leaps he takes but that he makes them so convincingly. Ruchir Joshi is relaxed and sincere, often ironic and very funny. Those readers wary of the vigorous Indian literary invasion, those tired of Salman Rushdie's apocalyptic seriousness or still angry at Tagore for The Home and the World, will find here a strong clear voice. --Michael Kedda

DVD Description
One of the most brilliant of all German Expressionist silent films, Murnau's THE LAST LAUGH uses a constantly moving and subjective camera to capture the emotional anguish of a man whose life is suddenly devoid of meaning. Because of his age, an elderly doorman at a hotel finds himself ignominiously demoted to washroom attendant. Particularly galling to the poor man is the loss of his uniform, which gives him pride and prestige. Crestfallen, he spends the day wandering the city, getting drunk and dreaming of suicide, mourning the loss of his dignity, and trying desperately to hang on to a shred of hope.

Advantages: If it's singing you want, it's there. Disadvantages: Over too quickly!
..., it's a talkie, but the silent movie actions still prevail as he "I love you, I love you, I love you," all the way up Lina's arm and instead of making an impact, the audience finds it hilarious. "Did someone get paid for writing that dialogue?" Don Lockwood is depressed, tells his two friends to take a last look at his house because it will be up for auction or something. He's enjoyed being at the top of his profession, immensely popular and with Lina enjoyed movie icon status. He realises that the end is in sight. He's been shown up and laughed at, but after Kathy and Cosmo dance and encourage him through a lively rendition of "Good mornin'", offer some truly innovative ideas for saving the show, he rallies and in a magnificently choreographed and sung rendition of "Singin' in the Rain" [I understand Kelly suffered a bad cold for a week...
