'The big freeze' Land before time DVD is an excellent one for christmas, as it gets you into the ''being cheerful, even though your bloody freezin''' mood. Of course, not being particularly religous I believe this is what has kept christmas going. That and, of course th huge economic value it has upon society.
For those unfamiliar with The Land Before Time it's the ultimate Dinosaur equivalent of Bambi. In that it's basic underllying theme is littlefoot becoming an orphan due to his mother being killed by a preadator. ( in this case by a 'sharp-tooth', in bambi's case, a human sports hunter ). We decided to update our home viewing collection and have recently been replacing all our favourites with the new DVD alternatives. I know you must think this would cost alot, however I've a 50% discount card for Blockbuster which has helped loads. Not only did I think it'd be great to have the 'digitally remastered' versions of our flims, the DVD formats is also much better to store as you can fit like 30 DVD's in the space of 10 VHS cases. And is the main reason, together with the purchase of a DVD player, why we've traded almost all our VHS's for the newer DVD versions.
The story tells the story of littlefoot, a baby 'longneck' dinosaur who becomes orphaned when his mother looses her life in a battle to defend her young with a sharp-tooth T-Rex dinosaur. A very sad moment and will have even the most sturn faced individual whimpering. Littlefoot must then find his way to the Great Valley, follwing the droughts his homeland is completely unhabitiable. Along the way, he meets and befriends other baby dinosaurs (sara, ducky, petri, and spike) and they form a herd built on strong friendships unlike any they've ever seen. At first they are frowned on by the others, as the usual herd format was that like dinosaurs stick with like dinosaurs, for example three horns stick with other three horns, long necks stick with other long necks etc..... Which leads to a good moral teaching for young children. It teaches the classic fabel 'don't judge a book by it's cover'' and also not to discriminate others by their differences. And that by working together you can overcome even the most challenging of things.
In this story Littlefoot and the gang get caught up in an blizardy ice storm and have to venture out on yet another dangerous adventure battling the elements, this time to save Spike who left the group in search of his own kind. Along the way, they run into the usual dangers, of sharp-teeth dinos, slippery slopes, near death experiences and meet some new characters who teach the little ones the importance of friendships and families. All in all a lovely story, with some wintery themed tunes, a pleasure to watch for children and big kids too :)

Overall 4 star rating, a wonderful storyline and good one for christmas/ december and january time of year. Dispite a lack of DVD featurettes and extras that would have made it more entertaining, It's still a must have addition to any Land Before Time fan's collection.
