Kate Forster, a doctor, decides to move from her lonely lakeside home and writes a letter to its new tenant. The reply leaves her confused; the new tenant, Alex Wyler, appears to think that he is the first tenant in the house for some time and he claims that he is living in 2004, when Kate is living 2006. The pair work out that the post box outside the lake house is some kind of catalyst that is enabling them to make contact across time. Slowly, they fall in love through their letters, although they think that they will never be able to meet. Then Kate realises that they have actually met in the past and they try to arrange a time to meet again. Will it work? Or are they destined to remain apart?
I watched this film shortly after having watched Premonition, which also stars Sandra Bullock, and I have to admit that once again she has impressed me. Kate is quite a complex character; she is a single woman who struggles to see the point of life until she starts corresponding with Alex. Although I'm used to seeing Sandra Bullock in more light-hearted roles, I think she deals with the role very well - I certainly found her very convincing - especially when she thinks that she will never have the chance to meet with Alex. It is a shame in a way that Kate and Alex aren't on-screen together more frequently in the film because when they are, the chemistry between the two is a real pleasure to watch.
Alex Wyler is another complicated character, having a turbulent relationship with his father - at the beginning of the film he has not seen his father or brother for quite some time and comes over as being a very lonely character. Keanu Reeves is excellent as Alex; he immediately drew me in because I felt I could identify with him and I really cared about what happened to him. I've not been that keen on Reeves' work recently, probably because I am not really a Matrix/Constantine sort of gal, but my opinion of him has certainly risen following this film.
I was amazed to see Christopher Plummer playing Alex's father - I still think of him as the charismatic Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music, but of course, he is now an old man, and in this film he isn't even a very likeable one. There is nothing wrong with his acting, it was just a surprise to see such a different side to him. Kate's mother, played by Willeke van Ammelrooy was also a bit of a surprise. For a start, I struggled to understand her - and I'm usually very good at understanding foreign accents - and then I found it hard to believe that she was related to Kate. I'm not sure that it is her fault, just that Kate/Sandra doesn't look terribly Dutch. But then in these days of multiculturalism, it is often hard to pinpoint a person's background.
I suppose the main criticism of this film is that the story just isn't very realistic. To all other intents and purposes, the story is a straightforward romance, but the time travel thing does take away from that. However, I found that once I'd accepted that Kate and Alex are living two years apart, I forgot that angle of it and just got on with enjoying the story. And anyway, so many films these days are hardly based on reality. There were occasions when I didn't quite follow the story, because things were glossed over so quickly, but I understood the basics. The story is apparently a remake of a Korean film - I will definitely be looking out for the original.
If you're expecting action along the lines of Sandra Bullock/Keanu Reeves in Speed, then you'll be disappointed with this; it is very much a slow-burner, more of a romantic drama than anything else. However, it is not an overly soppy romance - believe me I wouldn't be recommending it if it was - I'm far too much of a cynic. Instead, it is maturely romantic and I suspect will be appreciated more by slightly older viewers - for example, those in their thirties like me. I may be wrong, but it probably isn't fast-moving or jolly enough for a younger audience.
Although I wouldn't place The Lake House at the top of my list of favourite films, I did enjoy it. The story was strong and the performances were generally very good - it kept me intrigued from start to finish and I found myself rooting for both the main characters. I can't ask for much more. Recommended.

For a while this jeopardises everything and she pushes him away, like she does with everybody else. They also share the same dog, a female who goes by the name of Jack. During the movie the ...

The Lake House is a film about connection. About two people whose love spans time. Not in the normal way though - these two people are separated by two years. Kate is a doctor that leaves her beautiful lakehouse for a life in the city. She leaves a note for the new tenant, who turns out to be architect Alex, whose father originally built the house. edition of the DVD has no special features, not even a theatrical trailer. So already the movie is onto a second loosing battle, the idea of Blue Ray was that as well as being a much clearer image, you can get much more on the disc. But the worst atrocity is yet to come, The LakeHouse is not something that benefits from a high definition approach; its not colour rich, or not something that?s imagery is particularly pleasing to the eye. I?d go as far as to say that I doubt if you would notice much difference between the DVD and the Blue Ray release; anything much that is except the price.

DVD Description
Directed by Alejandro Agresti (VALENTIN), THE LAKE HOUSE reunites Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves for the first time since 1994's smash hit SPEED in this love story that transcends the limitations of time. When Doctor Kate Forster (Bullock) moves from a unique glass lake house to Chicago, she leaves a note in the mailbox for the new tenant asking that they forward any stray mail and apologizing for some mild inconveniences at the house that were there when she arrived, including paw prints in the entryway. Architect Alex Wyler (Reeves) moves in and finds Kate's note in the mailbox, but is confused--he responds that there are no paw prints to be found, and as far as he knows, the house has been empty for quite some time. When a stray dog runs past him as he is working on the entryway and leaves the trail of paw prints that Kate mentioned, Alex realizes that they are living in different years. Nonplussed by this odd turn of events, Alex and Kate continue to correspond via notes and letters left in the lake house mailbox. Soon they are sharing their secrets, confiding in each other, and falling in love. The film follows each character in his/her current time, chronicling Alex's relationship with his brother (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and estranged father (Christopher Plummer), as well as Kate's relationship with on-again/off-again boyfriend, Morgan (Dylan Walsh). As in all great love stories, Kate and Alex will ultimately have to take a chance. Can he wait for her until they are together in time? Will they each make the choices that ultimately allow them to be together? Only time will tell. Based on the South Korean film IL MARE, this visually appealing film makes wonderful use of Chicago and its architecture. Bullock and Reeves are both solid and likeable in the lead roles, bringing to life the wistfulness that Kate and Alex feel.
