I think everybody will probably know and love the classic Disney film 'The Jungle Book'. The film was released back in 1967 and was the 19th ever Disney animated movie to be brought out. The film is based on the books by Rudyard Kipling and was a great hit due to its theme and lovable characters.
The story: Mowgli is a man cub who left behind by his mother is taken in and raised by wolves. He loves Jungle life and doesn't want to leave but, Bagheera; the sensible and wise panther knows he must return to the man village at some point. So he tries to take him back to the man village where on the way Mowgli meets many fun characters. Some are friendly like Baloo, the lovable bear and cute baby elephant Junior but, some like Kaa, a hypnotic snake have not got his best interests at heart. Along with King Louie, the crazy and jazzy head ape and fearsome Shere Khan, King of the jungle the journey will be far from boring!
The cast: The people who do the voices in this film are well picked as they suit the style of the character and the personality perfectly! Again we see a couple of familiar names in the cast list along with some new ones. The full list of main characters and the actor used is below -
Mowgli - Bruce Reitherman Baloo - Phil Harris Bagheera - Sebastian Cabot Shere Khan - George Sanders Junior - Clint Howard King Louie - Louis Prima Kaa - Sterling Holloway Winifred - Verna Felton
Verna Felton and Sterling Holloway are well known for numerous parts in the early Disney productions. A lot of the rest of the cast had not appeared in other Disney animated films but, worked well to make these parts work so well.
Extras: My DVD is a 40th anniversary edition and so includes a huge variety of extras. The extras are split into two sections - one is the 'man village' and the other is 'jungle fun'. The complete list of these is below -
The man village extras are: - The bare Necessities: The making of the jungle book The lure of the jungle book Mowgli's return to the wild Art galleries Disney's Kipling: Walt's magic touch on a literary classic Frank and Ollie: Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston discuss character animation
The jungle fun extras are:- Baloo's virtual swinging jungle cruise which consists of a variety of challenge games including Kaa-Zen-Tration, Hathi's boot camp, Buzzard shop quartet and Louie's lounge. DisneyPedia: Junglemania The jungle book fun with language games
The games are quite fun and I can certainly see how a child would love playing these! The best thing for me though is the making of the jungle book as I always find these quite interesting to see how much work was involved with doing all the cartoon work etc. Overall though a very good selection of extras.
Overall opinion: I think the Jungle book probably has one of the catchiest and remembered songs in from all of the Disney films - maybe not as many good songs as some other animated films but certainly one of best and that is the brilliant song 'I wanna be like you' . You can guarantee that every time I hear that song my foot is tapping and I find myself actually wanting to get up and dance along - I can't explain it! It is just so catchy and fun! I am sure children will love this song. The characters are well developed and this makes it a fun and classic Disney film that the whole family can enjoy - I really do recommend this one for a Disney collection!
The DVD is available to buy from various high street and online stores and retails at around the £8 mark. The film is rate 'U' so is suitable for everyone
