Working under the code name 'Jackal' he is the best man in his field uninvolved without passion and willing to murder for pure gain. The cold precision of his preparations are juxtaposed with the plodding efforts of the French authorities to uncover the plot. Cyril Cusack is superb as the corrupt gunsmith and Delphine Seyrig a victim of the Jackal's attentions is outstanding.

All I seem to be writing about on Ciao these days is movies, movies and more movies. I enjoy the damn things so much; I might as well have made a career working in a video store than what I’m doing right now.
It was Saturday night and I wasn’t feeling like doing anything but snuggle up on my soft bed and wrap myself warm under my duvet, what with the nasty cold I had for the past few days (it’s true about men moaning the most). The film, The Jackal, was advertised on BBC1 for 9.30pm, and I thought under such circumstances, a crime thriller with a good cast, a hot drink and some munchies and I’m in heaven.
The Jackal, played by Bruce Willis, is an invisible, invincible assassin. Some people in high-powered places doubt he even exists. He’s been at the top of his ‘profession’ for twenty odd years, and nobody has got to him. Nobody has even seen him, well, apart from a couple of people, and that’s where the other star of the movie, in the guise of Richard Gere, pops onto the scene. Gere is Declan Mulqueen, an IRA terrorist banged up in a US jail, who the FBI think can help them catch their target by knowing someone who was in contact with The Jackal a few years back. The plot develops slowly and tediously as the clock ticks along. The odd bang and bullet thrown here and there. Some jokes make their way slightly funnily, well, in all honesty, I can only remember two for the whole duration of the film.
The script totally fails to explore Willis’ character, the subject and title of the whole thing, despite his best efforts to look ice cool, calm and collected. A large part of the plot centers on Mulqueen trying to direct the FBI’s efforts in the right direction (no surprise there, at least), but even the most fictitious of scripts would make it quite hard to swallow the fact that the FBI would allow an Irish terrorist to tell them what to do, no matter how nicely. The film lacks direction, jumping between different points, with the thinnest of connections, with some threads appearing totally unnecessary and unrelated to the story line. In many parts, you were left wondering what happened to the characters after a particular incident, sometimes even thinking, “Why was that bit in the movie in the first place?” The ending, suffice to say, was a total anti climax, and you almost hoped that Willis would actually get away with his crime, if only to add some zip to the film. Alas, he …………. Well, you probably guessed anyway – nothing gets past you lot.
My final thoughts? It certainly isn’t a boring film, it was somewhat enjoyable and certainly watchable, it just threw a darker light on its genre. With a credible cast that included Sidney Poitier amongst others – even Gere delivers a convincing Irish accent– it could have and should have been so much better of a film than it really was, and the plot line has been used many times over, much more successfully, that it was more a mystery than a disappointment why the film failed in all accounts. It certainly won’t tackle your grey matter, Wayne’s World has a more successful stab at that. Spend your money on renting out something more interesting, my runny nose was more lively than this picture.
Advantages: Reasonable film, good performances Disadvantages: Predictable, make up
None of the signs boded too well ... first we got Richard Gere and Bruce Willis in the lead roles, hardly personnel whom you would immediately associate with the higher things in modern cinema, trading more on their pretty boy looks than a background at RADA ... then you get Willis assuming the role of Master of 1,000 Faces, although he actually stretches to about six, and they all somehow look like the middle aged waster whom Willis played in Death ... ...that you shouldn't see 1997's The Jackal as a remake of 1973's Day of the Jackal, with the cut glass, clipped accent of Edward Fox...
Well, actually, whisper it very quietly, this film is quite watchable, absorbing and satisfying in a rather shallow sort of way. It ain't high culture, or a film that you're going to have to see again and again, or a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a decent enough film which is quite rewarding ...

The producers of The Jackal made great pains to point out that it is not a remake of the far better Day Of The Jackal released over 20 years earlier. Good for them, because if it was then it would be an absolute travesty for it to be quite this bad - as it stands, its just a naff movie. It features Bruce Willis as an international terrorist/assassin who is so effective in his operations that he has never been caught and the FBI is not even sure whether ... ...he has been hired by the Russians to bump off a prominent bod in the US for $70million. The FBI get wind of this and turn to the only person who they know can perhaps track him down - Richard Gere..an IRA terrorist!! Of course the FBI is always working not only alongside, but almost under the command of IRA terrorists which is the first and biggest of the enormously laughable sections of The Jackal's plot. Of course because of the Russian's involvement ...

Advantages: Great easy to watch film. Disadvantages: Just an action movie.
The film begins with an American FBI agent, Special Agent Preston (Sidney Poitier) making an arrest in conjunction with the KGB in soviet Russia. The resulting death of the arrestee triggers his father to arrange an assasination to strike fear into the hearts of the Americans, particularly the FBI, for causing the death of his son.
Bruce Willis plays, not particularly spectacularly, the skilled hitman known as the Jackal, using a number of guises ... ...The FBI enlist the help of the only man who is known to have seen him, a life-imprisoned IRA sharpshooter, Declan Mulqueen played quiite convincvingly by Richard Gere. The resulting action is tense from start to finish, and you will be torn between rooting for the jackal or Gere throughout the entire film as the action skips between the Jackals superbly planned out and executed attacks and preparations, and Mulqueens hunt for him under the watchful ...

Advantages: One of the few novels faithfully translated into film Disadvantages: none
The novel ,The Day of the Jackal , a thriller was published in 1971 by Frederick Forsyth. The story is about a professional assassin who is contracted by the right-wing OAS French terrorist group , to kill Charles de Gaulle, the President of France.
The novel had a carefully thought out plot. This fast-paced novel was based in parts on the actual events that occurred in 1960s France. The revolt in 1954, in Algeria and the following events that brought Charles De Gaulle to power in 1958.Elements in France and Algeria blamed De Gaulle for this political decision. They formed the Secret Army Organization (OAS), and decided to remove De Gaulle from power..There were many attempts on his life which were all foiled at the last minute by the French Police.
The swift moving plot, the realistic police methods, the interesting characters ...
Advantages: Great story and an extremely good thriller Disadvantages: none
Edward Fox plays the Jackal a hitman hired by French terrorists to kill the President Charles De Gaulle, for pulling his troops out of Algeria.
The tension is beautifully built up as we watch the Jackal take all the necessary steps to carry out his plan to assassinate De Gaulle.
It keeps all the suspense you would expect of a good Thriller as we follow the police as they try and attempt to prevent The Jackal from succeeding in his planned assassination.
Alot of people, including myself, hav seen the updated version staring Bruce Willis .I much prefer the original version as I feel the Bruce Willis version (The Jackal)also starring Richard Gere,is not quite as believable as the Edward Fox original, especially when you consider how many times De Gaulle had assassination attempts on his life.
I personally have also enjoyed the Fredrick ...
Advantages: Gripping, entertaining and memorable. Disadvantages: Not for special effects fans.
This 1973 movie based on the novel by the excellent Frederick Forsyth is one of the most watchable pieces of cinema in motion picture history.
Starring Edward Fox as the would be assassin of France's President De Gaulle the film tracks "The Jackal's" progress towards pulling the trigger as he makes his way through various locations whilst continually changing his identity so to keep at least one step ahead of the pursuing police and investigative authorities who are not so hot on his trail.
Interwoven into this plot is a certain amount of espionnage and a now somewhat nostalgic look back at what certain places, fashions, cars etc looked like back in the early 1970s as many of the scenes are shot outside on location in busy main streets in major European cities.
This is a truly gripping thriller and one of those films that almost makes ...
An update of THE DAY OF THE JACKAL, this spy thriller offers a seasoned FBI man (Sidney Poitier), a rigid Russian agent (Diane Venora), and a black-sheep IRA terrorist (Richard Gere) teaming up to stop a nasty and extremely well-paid assassin (Bruce Willis) from offing a U.S. official.
