Director: F. Gary Gray Producer: Tim Bevan, Donald De Line and Jim Dyer Writers: Donna Powers and Wayne Powers Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron,Donald Sutherland, Edward Norton Seth Green and Mos Def.
Released in 2003 this action pact remake was loosely based on the 1969 original. (and when I say loosely I mean loosely)
**BRIEF PLOT
When in Venice, John Bridger, (played by Donald Sutherland) meets up with his best friend Charlie, (played by mark Wahlberg) and then puts the plan into action. The plan is to rob a large bulk of heavily guarded gold bars from under the noses of the Italian police. As the brilliantly executed plan unfolds we are introduced to the rest of the gang, Steve Frazelli, (played by Edward Norton), 'wheelman' Rob, (played by Jason Stathem). Explosive expert Left Ear, (played by Mos Def) and computer expert Lyle 'Napster' (played by Seth Green). Things seem to be going to plan as the brief chase through the canals of Venice take place until a traitor amongst the gang spoils the partying and the booty is taken from them, leaving the rest of the gang fighting for their lives.
Then the movie really begins when it moves to the US with the gang searching for their loot which was taken from them. In Los Angeles, California, the gang discover the whereabouts of the gold bars and decide to take back what they consider to be really theirs.
With the gold being moved from place to place in a well organised plan the gang seem to be up against it trying to retrieve it.
**IN CONCLUSION**
A good film, (but in my opinion not as good as the original). The special effect are what you should expect from a movie in the 21st century, as is the storyline and the hi tech gadgets that are used to pull off the bullion robbery.
The new style Mini Cooper, (which aren't so mini anymore) are re-introduced, racing again through the sewers and the subway systems after bringing L.A. to a complete gridlock. There are a few similarities between the '69 movie and this remake but the main movie is totally different.
I suppose if this movie was given a different title I may have enjoyed it more as I was constantly comparing it to the original, so this spoiled it slightly for me as I was totally lost as to why this was called 'the Italian Job'?? considering most of the car chases and the action was in Los Angeles?? Maybe they should have called it 'The L.A. Job… with the stuff we nicked from Italy'..??
Don't get me wrong, this is an action packed movie and is great entertainment with a hint of humour and I did enjoy watching it, but it really isn't 'The Italian Job' is it? It is simply an American attempt at reviving a British classic movie.
Do would I recommend it… yes, why not. It is a good film with a good storyline and great acting… what more do you want from a movie.

Good review. Went to see this at the cinema with my son (while my wife went to see Calendar Girls with her mother). He thought it was brilliant, he didn't like the original so much. I thought the original was better.

Advantages: Slick well polished end product with a couple of nice set pieces and some fun charaters. Disadvantages: A disappointing waste of potential, heist by numbers movie.
Advantages: Brilliant cast, superb soundtrack, funny moments, well-written script Disadvantages: The original might be spoilt if Hollywood suceed in making a modern remake of this. The Italian Job without Michael Caine would suck!
