Despite the fact that this film is on nearly every Christmas without fail (except this one sadly) it really is great.
Considered the epitome of 60's Brit-cool this is the comedy crime film to end them all - From it's low key start right through to it's twist ending this is a hugely enjoyable slice of cinema and one that shouldn't be missed.
Troy Kennedy Martin's story is excellent: A group of crooks attempt to steal a delivery of gold bullion from the heart of Turin. There are twists and extras galore but the underlying story is that simple. What is worth a major mention though is the unforgettable car chase scenes as they are flawlessly filmed and executed, and are argueably the most memorable part of the film.
Michael Caine was never better as cockney rogue Charlie Croaker (think of Alfie but interested in crime rather than women), and indeed averyone of the cast does a great job - from the main players (Caine, Coward etc.) through to the bit part players (Mesurier, Handel etc.). Brimming with life and energy, the cast inject such an air of fun and enthusiasm that you just can't help enjoying yourself.
Visually this is swinging Britain at it's best with bold colours, grand OTT-ness and indeed everything that typifies the 1960's. We're treated to interesting camera angles, imaginative use of locations, and some stunning camera work.
Memorable for so many reasons, this film is topped off with a great theme tune and you'll be humming it all day long.
Although not originally for all audiences, this has mellowed with age and although young children may not appreciate it to the full, most of the audience will be able to sit back and enjoy it in all it's glory

I love the film!
That has always bugged me, WHAT HAPPENED NEXT???
I think the film was left open for a Italian Job Part two but I suppose it wouldn't have reached cult status if it had happened!
Good op.

Advantages: Brilliant cast, superb soundtrack, funny moments, well-written script Disadvantages: The original might be spoilt if Hollywood suceed in making a modern remake of this. The Italian Job without Michael Caine would suck!

Advantages: One of my favourite films of all time, an absolute classic film still enjoyed today. Disadvantages: It has taken its time to arrive in DVD format.
