watched written about and talked to death by millions virtually every day of the year. But how do the characteristics of England and Italy affect the game in these two footballing nations? Do the national stereotypes of Italians as passionate stylish lotharios and the English as cold-hearted eccentrics still hold true when they kick a ball around? Uniquely positioned across both the English and the Italian games they provide a fascinating and highly controversial commentary on where football is now and where it's headed. And they have invited some of the biggest names in the sport to join in their discussion. Sir Alex Ferguson Jose Mourinho Arsene Wenger Sven Goran Eriksson Fabio Capello and Marcello Lippi amongst others add their not inconsiderable weight to the highest-profile symposium on football ever convened.Gianluca Vialli and Gabriele Marcotti explore every aspect of football be it tactical and technical or cultural and sociological. It's not often that a remake of a classic movie is a hit but in my opinion the 2003 version of the Italian Job was a great movie.
The original version of the film is classified as a British caper film with lots of darsterdly deeds. It came out in 1969 and starred Michael Caine. Now I can't say that I've seen this version but from all accounts it was a classic. Apparently, according to an article I read, in 2004 the magazine Total Film named The Italian Job the 27th greatest British film of all time. The line "You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!", said by Michael Caine in the film, was voted the favourite movie one-liner in a 2003 poll of 1000 movie fans.
So, to remake the film was a pretty bold move but in my opinion a good one. The film's director, F Gary Gray called this version a homage to the original but he still put his own spin on it. They have turned a British movie into an American movie with most of the car scenes set in Los Angeles. This is one of the reasons why I like this movie because I love LA and it has so many greats shots of that beautiful city. It is filmed downtown a lot where there have some great long straight roads but also lots of hills and I really think this added to the chase scenes considerably.
The story sticks somewhat to the original I believe in that there is a gang of crooks who plan to get payback for past crimes. The main plot of this movie revolves around a team of thieves who plan to steal gold bullion from a former associate who double crossed them. The team is lead by Charlie Croker played brilliantly by Mark Wahlberg (Marky Mark). He has a special mix of boyish charm and persuasion that will make anybody do anything! The girl and love interest in this movie is played by Charlize Theron who is a really beautiful woman and plays the part of a bad girl/good girl particularly well. There is a really great supporting cast in this, they really did get a lot of stars to star in it. Donald Sutherland plays the older heist master who believed he was participating in his final heist until things took a different turn, Edward Norton, Seth Green, the great Jason Statham and Mos Def. They all worked really well together as a cast. I think this film could some what be compared to the Ocean's Eleven/12/13 movies as it has the same sort of teamwork values but different as well.
The original heist takes place in Venice Italy with some beautiful scenery and this is where we see the original double cross and is the start of the payback that the team wants.
The cars used in this movie for a lot of the scenes are the new style Mini Coopers so if you like these cars then this is definitely a film for you. The obviously got some great stunt drivers because some of the scenes with the cars are absolutely unbelievable and you wonder how on earth they do not crash into each other!
The DVD runs for approximately 110 minutes and has a number of good special features. If you only watch one do tune into The Italian Job - Driving School if you want to see more of the cars in action. Apart from that there are stunts, deleted scenes and The Making of The Italian Job.
Advantages: Good Action, Enjoyable, Well Staged Disadvantages: Wahlberg
A lot of people, myself included were horrified when it was announced that they were re-making The ItalianJob. The Michael Caine classic was distinctly british and never failed to entertain. It?s influence on things such as Britpop and general culture has always been clear to see. The big question was for the re-make was ?why bother??. I was also gritting my teeth when I heard Mark Wahlberg was taking the lead in the film, apart from Boogie Nights, this was an actor who seemed to suck the life out of anything he was in while his far-more skilled brother Donnie made do with the excellent TV show Boomtown.
Anyway it turns out that it was all just a storm in a teacup as you can?t really call this film a re-make. Sure it has some things in common with the sixties version but ultimately it?s a different film. It has the mini?s, it has ...
Benny Hill in a small role as Professor Simon Peach. The car chase is brilliant and stunning, and has since been copied by many people. There was a loose remake of this film made ain 2003, but it is not as good as this original version. I would highly recommend The ItalianJob to everyone. It is well worth buying on DVD. ...
Advantages: One of my favourite films of all time, an absolute classic film still enjoyed today. Disadvantages: It has taken its time to arrive in DVD format.
It has to be said, ever since I was first introduced to the film, 'The ItalianJob' as a child I have absolutely loved it. It is most definitely one of my favorite films of all time. Mind you we've been made to wait for the release of the DVD. The film was first released to cinema audiences in 1969 and believe it or not actually started life as a bit of a flop, almost sinking without trace. Fortunately it became almost a cult film a few years later and now enjoys its current status thanks to years of being shown on the television. In my view the impact the film has made can be summed up in a simple comparison of standards, "This film did for Minis what James Bond did for Vodka Martini and Aston Martin."

A film that exuberantly celebrates the fact that it's ace being British (Empire, 04/06/2009)
DVD Description
In this classic crime film, small-time crook Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) organizes a motley group of thieves to steal four million worth of gold bullion from an armoured car in Turin, Italy. The mastermind of the heist is Mr. Bridger (Noel Coward), an experienced convict who has come up with the idea, but can't take part in its execution because he's in jail. To pull off the plan, the gang must tie up traffic in the center of the city to divert attention from the robbery, and ultimately make off with their booty undetected. The caper leads to one of the most exciting automobile chases ever filmed.
