North To Alaska

Advantages: Two big starts doing comedy
Disadvantages: Can be slow in some places

I saw the last 20 minutes of this comedy when it was on TV. I went out and bought the DVD as I have never seen this the whole way through. Glad I did. When watching this film through from start to finish you do get a sense of awe in respects of the production values and the big sets that were used in production. Scenes like the boarding of the ship, the logger contest and the town street scenes all have dozens of extras to fill the screen. Something that on a lot of occasions is done today by computer as a cost saving. The plot is that Stewart Granger plays George Pratt and John Wayne plays Sam McCord with Fabian playing George's brother Billy. Grainger and Wayne are partners, totally 50/50 on everything. They own a mine in Alaska and have hit the big time with the gold rush happening around the turn of the century. As McCord is ...

O Brother, Buy This DVD!

Advantages: Hilarious, wholesome, engaging, clever, complete!
Disadvantages: DVD extras are only useful for the returning fan

In about every five years, one film will come our way that would go on to be immortal in the annals of film history. O Brother is one of those films. From start to end, I was fervently engaged in this story as it unravels against the Depression era background with almost balletic pacing. In fact, some have described this film as half belonging to the musical genre. Trust the Coen brothers to come up with a film of such rich contextual detail! But even if you're not familiar with or don't enjoy the works of Joel and Ethan like Fargo, The Big Liebowski and The Man Who Wasn't There, this film will surely mark the turning of the tide because it projects the widest audience appeal. Not only is it entirely wholesome and suitable for the family (and this would usually lead to genre restrictions), it would entertain everyone from the nerdiest ...

The Isley Brothers

Advantages: good lyrics
Disadvantages: silly album title

With Christmas illuminating hearts around the world, what could be more satisfying than having the Isley Brothers sing to you right in your very own home. Their new yuletide offering, The Isley Brothers: I'll Be Home For Christmas, will stay in your CD player for many years to come, guaranteed. The Isley Brothers first holiday album features ten classic hits, including "Winter Wonderland," "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" and "Silent Night." So, what's so special about this album compared to many other holiday albums out there? Take a guess -- Ron Isley. With his soothing voice on top of these timeless holiday tracks, it is very much a present for all to enjoy. If there are lovers out there during this Holiday season, Mr. Smooth hasn't forgotten about you. They may not be your traditional Christmas songs, but "I'm In Love With You ...
