I bought this DVD in Germany for 21.99 euros which is about £15.60 which is quite good value for me. I only bought this because Ewan McGregor is in the starring role and I absolutely love his films. Anyway here's my review of The Island.
DVD Basics ~~~~~~~~~~
Running time - 130 minutes Languages - English/German Subtitles - English/German For Hard of Hearing - English/German Region 2 Rating - For people over the age of 16
Cast ~~~~
Ewan McGregor - Lincoln Six Echo Scarlett Johansson - Jordan Two Delta
(Also stars Sean Bean, Michael Clark Duncan, Steve Buscemi)
The Film ~~~~~~~
Set in the year 2100, this film starts by showing us that the earth's population (or the population of the United States) are now living underground in a sterile environment following a massive pollution of earth's atmosphere. However, there is a place where you can go if you are lucky - The Island. On a regular basis there is a lottery held and if you are really lucky, your name is picked to go to live on the Island for the rest of your life in peace, tranquility and luxury. The Island is the only place outside of the sterile environment that is fit for habitation by humans.
Lincoln Six Echo (McGregor) and Jordan Two Delta (Johansson) are two people who live and work and play in this environment. Lincoln is exceptionally curious about life outside the complex and is always asking questions about other things. He is friends with Jordan but friendship between the sexes is not allowed - there is a proximity alert to stop people getting too close.
After watching the introduction, Lincoln discovers that the world above ground is far from polluted - in fact it is inhabited by humans. He witnesses one of his co-workers being killed for body parts and this scares him. When Jordan is chosen through the lottery to go to the Island, he realises that she is going to die, and the two manage to escape into the real world.
There ensues a chase and a scene where you find out that Lincoln, Jordan and all the other inhabitants of the underground complex are in fact clones who are manufactured purely for body parts. The two decide to find Lincoln's 'sponsor' (the person who paid to be cloned) and go to the media with the story, thereby bringing down the corporation running the underground complex.
I'm not going to tell you the end of the film because that would make it unnecessary for you to watch it, and i have not told you the full extent of the film, just enough to give you a taste of what the film is about.
My Opinion ~~~~~~~~~
I think this film was great! I watched it twice before i managed to understand the storyline (the first time i was so tired i fell asleep half-way through the film). However, it is a little bit scary to think that this could actually happen in the future. In fact, how do we know it doesn't happen already? The film is so well thought out and i felt that the acting on McGregor and Johansson's parts were brilliant, that I felt that I was there with them. They have both portrayed their characters flawlessly. McGregor actually plays a double role in this film. Lincoln with an american accent, and his other character with his own scottish accent. This to me was superb acting on his part. I would watch this film again and again - I really enjoyed it.
There is an extra feature on the DVD which I have not explored yet and that is The Making Of The Island (ROM link). I am publishing this review as a film only review as I have not yet explored this extra feature. Once I have done i will come back and edit the review accordingly.
I have no hesitation in recommending this film to everyone as it is a great film to watch. Some may find it far fetched, but it is something which could happen in the future, and I found it highly entertaining.
If you are lucky maybe you'll be selected to go to the Island.
Happy watching and thanks for reading. xx

Great review. However I have to be honest and disagree with you regarding the acting ability of Ewan McGregor who, although I usually love, I found his american accent totally unconvincing and really irritating. I liked the film although it was one of those I watched while ironing rather than being totally engrossed by it. x

i really think this film is one of the most over-rated sci-fi action films to have been screened for a long long time. i put this next to the absolutely horrible Aeon Flux. i feel it's hollow and had bad screenplay. still i take nothin away from your very helpful review.

Personally, I thought the film was very interesting, right up until the point they left 'The Island', after which it was a bit of a conventional chase film for me. However, your review almost had me convinced, and you make your point succinctly!

Advantages: Great script, great effects and will make you think afterwards Disadvantages: Acting a bit so so & degenerates into chase movie for second half
