I'm sure many people will have some memory of reading a story by Ted Hughes called "The Iron Man". Well this film is an adaptation of that story.
An enormous robot falls from space to the earth to be discovered by a young boy named Hogarth Hughes. It's the fifties and america is just coming out of the war. Hogarth finds this giant metal robot to be quite innocent but has a problem hiding the 50 foot tall monster and keeping him a secret. This robot likes to eat metal and soon some cars are left chomped in half that interests the government. Naturally Hogarth and the Iron Ginat have a lot of fun until the government show up and want to nuke the innocent robot after a government agent lies about him being a threat. This is a fantastic animated film that actually has a lot of old fashioned style and charm. It has some great litl touches about the period it's set in with references to america's fascination with all things nuclear. It also has a lot of humour and you'd never think you could care so much for a 50-foot tall piece of metal. Harry Knowles of Aint It Cool News.Com raved about the film and rightly so but sadly it didn't really set the box office alight.
The dvd is in it's original 2.35:1 widescreen format and is anamorphic. The transfer I would imagine came from a digital source so it's pristine. The colours are all incredibly strong and vibrant. The Region 1 version also has a 4:3 version on the flipside of the disc.
The sound is in Dolby Digital 5.1 and it's avery lively mix with some very deep bass in the later pafrts of the film. Dialogue is well mixed and sound effects are well balanced with every speaker.
As for the extras well what you get isn't fantastic, this may be due to the fact that it floundered at the box office. First up is a 'making of' that runs for about 25 minutes. It's hosted by deep gravel voiced actor Vin Diesel who voices the Giant in the film. You get a look at the animation process and ideas for the story but it really just skims the surface and is just a tool to sell the film.
There is also a music video that is merely clips from the film that runs for a couple of minutes and the theatrical trailer.
But this is a film that kids and adults should enjoy on many levels.
