Sci-fi and animation are genres to which Michael Kamen is almost a stranger (although ... more
Event Horizon almost qualifies as both!) and it's amazing to see what a new canvass inspires. The Iron Giant is a score of David and Goliath proportions, extending to extremes of subtlety and boldness for nine-year-old "Hogarth Hughes" and his new pal, the giant robot. "Cat and Mouse" demonstrates things nicely in an hilarious conversation in the style of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with timid flutes questioning and being answered by blaring low brass. "You Can Fix Yourself ?" is then the sweet start of their relationship. The album opens with "The Eye Of The Storm", which, with its brass crescendo citing Mr. Holland's Opus, is at once obviously Kamen and then delightfully much more. Throughout there's a use of glockenspiel that mimics the mechanic workings of the robot, as well as a rapidly played synth musical box effect: both are linked to the innocence of the friends. In contrast is "The Army Arrives", a raucous piece of militaria quite different for the composer in its taut rhythm (he's generally distinguishable for his long-line melodies). A rare opportunity to find the Kamen kid in an empty playground. --Paul Tonks

eleven-year-old Hogarth Hughes home. Now, young Hogarth has one big friend and an even bigger problem: How do you keep a secret that's 50 feet tall? Especially when a paranoid government agent is on the alien invader's trail, bringing with him the full might of the U.S. military to destroy the giant. It all adds up to a rousing adventure that's part metal, part magic... and all heart.
Advantages: Great storyline and voices Disadvantages: Not recommended much

I watched this film on TV one weekend, I was looking forward to it, but I didn't personally think it would be that good, I was wrong! The film was great and almost instantly decided to write an opinion on it!
Anyway onto The Iron Giant itself, the film was originated from a poem written by famous poet, Ted Hughes. The poem was supposedly written for his children but the idea of the Iron Giant was used to create the film by DISNEY and as expected it met all its expectations.
The film tells the story about a young boy called Hogarth Hughes who one night comes across a 50 ft tall iron giant. Hogarth Hughes being himself saves the giant and manages to make friends with the thing, he helps the giant to learn how to talk and become the next super hero.
With all the destruction that a 50ft iron giant could possibly do, the town is on the lookout and with evil federal agent Kent Mansley searching for the giant, times proove hard for both the iron giant and Hogarth.
After convincing the local scrap yard man that the iron giant exists and he is good NOT bad, Hogarth manages to find a place for the iron giant to kip the night, better yet a place he can eat as well. ~ The iron giant only eats metal which makes the scrap heap the perfect place.
Then Hogarth finds himself along with the giant, taking on the whole U.S army! The US is convinced that the giant is nothing but trouble and needs to die, with the help of the scrap yard man and Hogarths single mother, Hogarth believes he can win. So the story goes on to find out whether Hogarth will save the iron giant......
The film is set in Rockwell US and although is only a cartoon, it's a great film indeed. With many voices used for the actors and actresses, surely the best one has to be Hogarths. ~ This voice is done by Eli Marienthal. (I didn't actually know this until , 'babyxxgirl' another fellow ciao member informed me! ~ You should check out her opinions too, they're great!)
It took me a while to get round to seeing this film but I've now seen it and I wasn't disapointed at all, if you're up for a lame laugh and some funny cartoon work, this is one for you, as usual it meets all of DISNEY's expectations, It's a really good story and very touching, also very sad. Produced by Disney, this film is 1 of a kind and I'll surely go back and watch it again one day. ~ It's a film for everyone, the whole family so if you haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for!!!??? Thanks for reading everyone, cheers ~M~ (EmmaXXX)
Advantages: Great characters, funny, touching, very entertaining Disadvantages: Though the FX are good, they're not up to the fantastico stuff we've seen more recently, also not many extra features
...seem to be taking over the animation market. Whereas Disney’s recent releases (Mulan, The Emperor’s New Groove and Dinosaur spring to mind) have not achieved the success of their earlier releases, such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, animation features that are coming from the folds of other production studios are doing roaring trade, Shrek being an excellent example. The film tells the story of Hogarth Hughes, a young adventurous boy who makes a discovery that is feared by most but terrifically exciting to him. Whether the film actually stays true to the original story, I’m afraid I can’t say because it’s been so long since I have read it.

The year is 1957 a lone satellite, Sputnik, drifts in orbit around Earth, its monotone pips the only sound to violate the silent void. ...clutching a ticket to see The Iron Giant. I had not been greatly impressed by most of the recent Disney offerings(A Bugs Life aside) and the thought of seeing a non-Disney movie with a voice-over cast list of B-movie standard actors didn’t do much to whet the appetitie. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to find that The Iron Giant was not another Disney-wannabe but rather a thought provoking morality tale packed with social ... ...both adults and children. The hokey comedy element is not the main feature of The Iron Giant as is the case with many other animated cartoons, but a complementary element of the movie as a whole and as such I feel that it works well on both adult and child levels. Set in 1950’s America, we are first introduced to a young boy named Hogarth. He is a lonely child, the son of an over worked waitress(voiced by Jennifer Aniston) and makes various ...

...robot falls from space to the earth to be discovered by a young boy named Hogarth Hughes. It's the fifties and america is just coming out of the war. Hogarth finds this giant metal robot to be quite innocent but has a problem hiding the 50 foot tall monster and keeping him a secret. It ain't easy being a superhero; just ask the Incredibles. Not only is there all that world-saving to be done, but these days the public aren't just stupid or helplesss - they're litigious, too. So the former Mr Incredible, his wife Elsatigirl (voiced by Holly Hunter) and their three equally unusual children are hiding out in pseudo-1950s suburban hell, trying to pretend they're normal. At least until a suitably evil baddy comes along...

Based on poet Ted Hughes' 1968 children's book, (former SIMPSONS producer) Brad Bird's adaptation proves to be a work of art the family can enjoy together- simple and visually captivating enough for kids and sharp and touching enough for adults. Hogarth is a young boy in 1950s Maine. When he finds a kind and very large robot (of unknown origin), a strong bond of friendship is formed between the two. It isn't long, however, until a government agent is on their trail, wanting to destory the robot. A beautifully rendered fable.
