~ Plot ~ The Interpreter stars Nicole Kidman who plays the UN interpreter Silvia Broome. When Silvia returns to the UN building at night to collect some of her possessions, she accidentally overhears a death threat against an African head of state, in a language only she and a few others can speak. Silvia then also becomes a target and her world is turned upside down. Under the protection of federal agent Tobin Keller (Sean Penn), Silvia's past is dug deep into. Being raised in Matobo in Africa, her previous life is bought to light involving secrets and lies, connections to these heads of states and a background that she wishes to forget. And the fact that they believe the death threat is aimed at Edmond Zuwanie (Earl Cameron), the president of Matobo, Silvia's old home town, just seems like too much of a coincidence. Keller needs to decide whether Silvia is telling the truth or if this is all just a big conspiracy and that she is actually a suspect. At the same time, Keller is still trying to come to terms with the recent death of his wife and Silvia becomes an unexpected friend.
Other cast members include Catherine Keener as Dot Woods, Keller's work partner; Jesper Christensen; and Yvan Attal.
~ My opinion ~ I originally saw this film at the cinema and loved it and I watched it again on TV a few nights ago. The plot and storyline is a brilliant one including conspiracy, politics, ethics, and assassinations. Nicole Kidman plays the role perfectly with a mixture of curiousness, secrecy and loyalty. Even playing a rather plain and quiet character, she still manages to look naturally beautiful and graceful. Her capabilities of speaking in different accents never ceases to amaze me and her African accent is perfect in this film. Sean Penn takes on his role as federal agent and protector very well and manages to convey his mixed feelings of care and mistrust towards Silvia brilliantly.
Because the death threat was spoken in a different language, we also don't know whether Silvia is telling the truth about what she heard and this leaves us guessing along with Keller. Her mysterious past surprises us as much as it does him and, at the same time as worrying about her safety, you also start to wonder if she is actually who she says she is.
The action in the film is exciting and thrilling and there are a few moments which will have you jumping in your seat. There is always something going on to keep your attention on the screen in this fast-paced action film and the ending has a great twist.
I love my conspiracy and action films and I have to say that this is one of the best for me. I would definitely recommend you give it a watch.

Kidman is usually a good reason for me to avoid a film, If I'm honest.

I was actually in New York when they filmed the UN scenes. It was the first time that film crews were allowed inside and film for a commercial movie and not a documentary. I enjoyed the movie although wasn't too keen on the ending.
