The Incredibles is a 2004 animated film from the geniuses at Pixar. The Incredibles is the 6th Disney Pixar films, to date they’ve released 9 in total. They include: Toy Story (1995), A Bug’s Life (1998), Toy Story 2 (1999), Monsters Inc (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Cars (2006), Ratatouille (2007) and Wall-E (2008). The most successful on the 9 films being the brilliant Finding Nemo, worldwide it grossed around $800 million. The Incredibles was made on a budget of $92,000,000 and grossed an estimated $631,442,092 at the box office. The film is rated U as it’s suitable for children of all ages.
The critics loved The Incredibles, to date it has received 97% positive ratings, placing it at number 12 of the 20 greatest action films of all time. This being a child’s film is a big achievement. The Incredibles eventually became the 5th highest grossing film of 2004 and the second highest grossing animated film of the year behind Shrek 2.
The Incredibles is directed by Brad Bird who’s well known for his work on animated films, he also directed the fantastic Ratatouille and the 1999 film The Iron Giant. Bird also contributed a voice for The Incredibles, he had a small part playing fashion designer Edna Mode. In 2005 Bird directed a short spin off called Jack-Jack Attack.
The voices for The Incredibles include: Craig T Nelson (Mr Incredible), Holly Hunter (Elastigirl), Sarah Vowell (Violet Parr), Spencer Fox (Dash Parr) and Samuel L. Jackson as Mr Incredible’s best friend and fellow superhero Frozone.
Mr Incredible used to be the best superhero around, he was worshiped by the general public and could basically do no wrong, that was until one day when he was making a rescue he threw a bomb out of a window which blew up the rail line. This all happened because he was trying to save a crazed young
fan. After the incident the public turned on superheroes and they ended up being banished to a life or normality, this also affected Mr Incredibles superhero wife Elastigirl.
15 years later the two former superheroes are still married and now have three young children, their two oldest have inherited their super powers. Their oldest child Violet has the ability to make herself invisible and also make herself a human shield while her younger brother Dash can run at the speed of light. When Mr Incredible receives a message from an unknown woman concerning his super powers he’s intrigued and goes along to the meeting. They want him to reform into the amazing hero he once was and Mr Incredible can’t resist, however when his wife finds out she isn’t exactly pleased to say the least and goes off in search of him, only thing is the kids follow her. What Mr Incredible doesn’t know is that very soon he will be facing an old nemesis and with his wife and kids on the way he soon realises that they are in grave danger…
I’m a big fan of Disney Pixar films and I don’t care how embarrassing that sounds! I’ve seen all 9 of the Pixar films and they just seem to get better and better with time. I found Finding Nemo especially to be absolutely superb and as this was the successor it had big shoes to fill, luckily it did the job brilliantly and in my eyes it’s even better than it’s predecessor.
I first watched this at the cinema, I was supposed to be taking my young Cousin, who was about 4 at the time swimming but as the weather was bad the outdoor pool suddenly didn’t seem like such an appealing option, so instead we went to see The Incredibles at the cinema. Although I did thoroughly enjoy all the other Pixar films they’re not exactly what I would call gripping.
This film was different, when I read that it had been voted 12th best action film of all time I was a little surprised but reflecting upon it now I can absolutely see why. This film not only is enjoyable for children but it can also be enjoyed by adults. This became the first and only ever children’s film that I found myself entrawled in and it deserves massive appreciation for that.
My Cousin utterly adored this, when he was that age he would generally begin to feel restless part way through the film and often got up to play with his toys or start making loud noises, however throughout this film he remained silent, apart from the roars of laughter and frequent moments he stayed silent and absolutely still. He didn’t even nudge me to take him to the toilet, instead he made me run with him after the film so he could use the toilet! I think for a 4 year old to become that involved in a film is fantastic and I must admit that I was equally as gripped by this which hugely surprised me.
The animated was fantastic, not in the realistic way that some people would expect. You wouldn’t mistake Mr Incredible for a real person but in all the detail, I imagine that this film must have taken a very long time to wait and luckily it was nowhere near being a waste of time. The action scenes were fantastic and very imaginative, you literally wont want to take your eyes off this film for a second in fear of missing something. The voices compliment the characters brilliantly, I especially liked Samuel L. Jackon’s character Frozone, especially the argument he has with his wife about his super suit. It’s something that adults will really be able to relate to and that’s what Pixar does so well, it knows it’s audience. It knows that parents are likely to be watching this with their children so amongst all the comedy aimed at children it throws it gags which adults with laugh at too. One thing that ran throughout the film was the troublesome but loving marriage between Mr Incredible and Elastigirl, they must have really studied this because it definitely reflects a married couple and how they bicker about the smallest o things. It got the different roles of men and women down brilliantly too with Mr Incredible really wanting to go out and fight crime while Elastigirl has her feet on the ground and is constantly thinking about the children.
This film already comes highly recommended from anyone who’s already had the pleasure of seeing it but I would just like to recommend it once more, it’s a real joy to watch and it’s one of those films that can be enjoyed by you and young children over and over again.
After seeing this at the cinema I eventually bought it on DVD for my Cousin when it was released, well I say for my Cousin but it was partly for my benefit too. Needless to say we both thoroughly enjoyed it just as much as the first time. I think when I bought this a couple of years ago it cost me about £14.99 which I know is a high price but in my honest opinion it was undoubtedly worth it. These days it can be bought from play.com for £14.99, no that’s not a typing error it’s not £4.99 it is actually £14.99! This is something I don’t quite understand myself as it really should be cheaper but if I was going to buy it now I would happily pay that price for this fantastic film.
