I first came across the Inbetweeners on BT vision, several months after it had been shown on E4 and actually watched series 2 first. The first one I watched made me laugh out loud (and it takes a lot for me to do that) and I had to watch all of them pretty much back to back.

I am now catching up on the first series as it is being shown on channel 4. But I didn’t miss anything by watching it the wrong way round!

The programme follows the lives of 4 boys who are 17 and in the process of sitting their A levels. It is narrated in parts by Will who has moved to the new comprehensive school from a private school. He was being bullied in his last school and it is not hard to tell why. He wears a blazer to school and carries a brief case. He is very posh and likes things to be done the ‘proper’ way. In a word – he is a nerd!

On arriving at the school he attempts to make some friends. There are 2 other ‘nerds’ who start at the same time but he doesn’t want to be friends with these so he befriends a group of 3 lads called Jay, Neil and Simon. At first they don’t like him, but as time goes on they realise he isn’t that bad and they become the best of friends.

It is called the Inbetweeners because this group of guys don’t really fit into any of the groups that exist in a school. Will is the posh nerd, Jay thinks he is the school stud and has bedded most of the girls. Neil is the dumb one who doesn’t always understand what is going on and Simon, is most respects, is quite normal.

In the beginning of series 1 Simon passes his driving test so most of the lads adventures involve the freedom of driving around.

What makes this programme so funny is that it is so true to life. I spent most of my school days at a girls school, but the last 4 years I did go to a mixed school. And it was exactly like this. It shows the highs and lows of being a teenager – skipping school and getting drunk, dealing with the embarrassing parents (or in Will’s case – the Mum that everyone fancies) and the stress of trying to get a girl.

The programme can be quite graphic at times with obscene language (especially when Jay talks about girls) and some scenes of nudity. There are also some very cringe worthy moments including when the 4 of them decide to help out at an old peoples home in order to try and impress a girl.

At the moment there are only 2 series’ and I am not sure if there are going to be any more. Unfortunately they only last for 30 minutes and there are only about 6 episodes in each series. I hope they are going to make more, but if you haven’t seen it before then it is definitely worth watching.
