I absolutely adore this film for many reasons, although it is actually regarded as a "woman's" film, whatever that may be! I first fell in love with the book by Michael Cunningham and when I saw who was making the film (the director of Billy Eliot and the recent Kate Winslet winner "The Reader"), I went to see it on screen and then on DVD and was not disappointed
It is the winning combination of a great script, Virginia Wolf, sublime actresses (Nicole Kidman won her Oscar for this film), the atmosphere and the music by Philip Glass. I won't give the story away but is all based on Vigina Wolf's "Mrs. Dalloway" and a day in the life of three woman separated by time but inextricably linked one way or another.
Nicole Kidman plays Virgina Wolf, Meryl Streep plays a modern day Mrs Dalloway preparing a party for a dying friend who is to be awarded a literary prize and Julianne Moore plays an unfulfilled 1950s housewife who has to take a life changing decision. All this is weaved together by exquisite editing and a haunting soundtrack that literally mesmerises.
I thoroughly recommend this film for a good cinematic experience in all senses of the word.
